First there was a really geeky video.
Then there was a pastiche in the comment threads.
Then there was a conspiracy.
Happy anniversary, Patrick and Teresa, with love from Making Light.
As promised, the initial reaction via IM:
10:07:13 Abigail Sutherland: There's something funny on the front page of ML. Don't worry, it's not serious, but can you ping me when you wake up?
10:07:44 Abigail Sutherland: Just want you to take a look at it.
12:02:11 Patrick Nielsen Hayden: Awake now! What is it?
(Abi posts entry)
12:04:07 Abigail Sutherland: you might have to refresh a couple of times to see it
12:04:51 Abigail Sutherland: got anything yet?
12:05:03 Patrick Nielsen Hayden: hold on...
12:07:24 Patrick Nielsen Hayden: jeeeeeeeeeeeeez
12:07:32 Patrick Nielsen Hayden: you GUYS
12:07:38 Abigail Sutherland: Gotcha
12:08:03 Patrick Nielsen Hayden: what a very well-executed conspiracy
12:08:25 Patrick Nielsen Hayden: Thank you!
12:08:31 Abigail Sutherland: Do you like how four of the people on the video were at lunch with you right in the heart of the action and never said a word?
12:08:47 Patrick Nielsen Hayden: I was just thinking that through.
12:08:59 Abigail Sutherland: Don't thank me, really; Pendrift did the bulk of it, and Serge herded people with his usual skill
12:09:05 Patrick Nielsen Hayden: I also notice that Avram and Chris did there bit in the Tor conference room.
12:09:10 Abigail Sutherland: Yep
12:09:14 Patrick Nielsen Hayden: their
Kinda makes you wanna...cheer loudly?
Yup.
Happy anniversary, Teresa and Patrick!
Okay, Teresa has, I believe, finally regained the use of her limbs.
I believe her mouth is still hanging open in astonishment.
Jesus Christ on a pogo stick with sprinkles. Thank you all.
Logging in from Geneva International Airport to say happy anniversary, Teresa and Patrick!
It's like a VIRTUAL SURPRISE PARTY, with dinosaurs springing out of the sponge cake.
Re comment #4: Teresa is so stunned that she nearly tipped over the vat of confiscated vowels.
An excellent tribute to a peerless Internet-node. I endorse this and its message without reservation. Happy anniversary, Patrick and Teresa, and thank you for everything.
¡Feliz aniversario de matrimonio!
That's so cool. It's also neat to see what everyone looks like.
Happy anniversary, Patrick and Teresa!
Okay, I've just stepped through this with my mouse hovering over the "pause" button so I can catch all the little bits, like Xopher's signs annotating his main sign. The screencap from our bit of the previous "boomdeyada" video, on the wall behind Bill Higgins. (As Abi said: "Recursion, meet recursion.") The fact that Elise recorded her bit at Potlatch in Seattle, which means that what's visible in the hotel window behind her is literally our old neighborhood. "Fetchez la vache!" Avram and Chris doing their bit, unbeknownst to me, in the Tor conference room. And the serial comma.
Woo hoo! Happy anniversary and happy conspirators!
With, with the Flourosphere! And Ajay's timid, Piglet-like voice! And Xopher's footnotes, and David Goldfarb and Lee singing "Bmdyd, bmdyd," and everybody looking so cool, and I am amazed.
Thank you!
What SeanH said. Thank you Patrick and Teresa, and very best wishes for the future.
Wow. Happy anniversary!
(Boomdeyada boomdeyada boomdeyada boomdeyada)
I have long since forgotten when I started reading Making Light; I have been commenting for nearly a quarter of my life thus far. Over all that time ML has remained one of my first checks on my daily Internet round. If I have ten minutes on a slow public-access terminal and am having to remember all my URLs, I will still read the comments. I can only speak for myself; but the hold this website exerts over my time and attention is without precedent. Again, and again and again, thanks.
In addition to all the other cool cool bits in this video, I'd like to toss in a bit of appreciation for the title of this thread.
There's so much stuff in that video. Mac and Lisa's mysterious skeleton. Fragano's office (?). Wondering whether this means TexAnne has knitted an entire mitered blanket. Bill Higgins manifesting his full and blinding aspect. Dawno, lurking, with a hat covering her telltale ears. Getting to see Pendrift cooking, and how Terry Karney moves. And ...
(Watches video again.)
TNH #21: That's my home office.
Oh, and thanks to Alex and Fiona Sutherland for the loan of their toys to make up my "community".
While I did not have a hand at making this video, I share its sentiments.
Happy anniversary!
Well done! And Happy anniversary, PNH and TNH!
WOW! I love this place.
Happy Anniversary, P&T.
I'd like to thank people who'd have liked to contribute but weren't able to, for technical reasons. I'd also like to thank Pendrift for all her work. She's too modest to toot her own horn, but she can be seen HERE blowing into one.
Wonderful! Bravo to all the conspirators, and happy anniversary, Teresa and Patrick!
Yay! They were really surprised! They like it! We (all) win!
Happy Anniversary, Unhyphenated Ones! (Wait, that makes you sound like Lovecraftian demons. Nuts.) Happy Anniversary, Patrick and Teresa!
Thanks Pendrift for all that work. Thanks abi for organizing this and nagging me until I did my bit! Thanks everyone for being a community that makes it seem right and proper to do this (especially TNH and PNH themselves)!
You have such cool friends
who do some awesome stuff
and bring glad tidings
in honor of your love.
Boomdeyada boomdeyada boomdeyada boomdeyada.
Happy Anniversary Patrick & Theresa!
31: thanks also abi for the (polite and understated) nagging without which...
And congratulations to the happy dyad!
Btw, I stole the "So do my" things from a t-shirt I saw in the 80s.
Wonderful! It's so much fun to see what people look like and hear what they sound like.
Happy anniversary, Patrick and Teresa! Thank you for creating this place.
I love Making Light. Just sayin'.
Happy anniversary!
Best salon in town. That was wonderful.
Happy Annivesary, P&T.
Happy anniversary, Patrick and Teresa!
And your conspirators rock, in amazing ways!
abi @23 -- watching the video (yet) again, I saw your community has a troll :-)
"Fetchez la vache!" Nécessite un chien très grand en effet.
A very happy anniversary, Patrick and Teresa! (The mysterious skeleton spoke dead languages...)
Happy anniversary!
(And to the perpetr conspir creators: well done!)
Happy Anniversary!
I love it when a surprise works.
I love this place, and all the people in it.
Debbie @40:
watching the video (yet) again, I saw your community has a troll :-)
Two, actually, but good eye. Wouldn't be realistic without them. I love them, too, though.
Conspirators, very nice work!
P&T, happy anniversary!
So cool! Happy anniversary, and what SeanH said, with much regard from this longtime mostly-lurker.
<wipes eyes> NSFW! NSFW!
Teh Universe did a Very Cool Thing when he/she/it/they put you two together, and then gave y'all to the rest of us.
Happy Aniv!!
How wonderful! Happy anniversary!
MacAllister @ 42... Puns, eh? When I told Marna Nightingale what I was planning to do with the 'punning' verse, she whacked me in the back of the head. She said it was a sign of affection. No, she didn't then proceed to poke me in the eyes.
Happy Anniversary, Patrick and Teresa!
I am beyond flattered to have been asked to participate. The bmdyds were David's idea.
Serge@50: affection and esteem, I assure you. Just ask Karney; he has been given many such tokens of my admiration over the years.
Patrick @6: It's like a VIRTUAL SURPRISE PARTY, with dinosaurs springing out of the sponge cake.
Yeah, but you probably don't want to think about what they were doing while they were waiting in there...
Also: Happy Anniversary, Teresa and Patrick! I don't sing in front of people, but I did bop in a congratulatory way and wave my knitting about...
It was a pleasure. We got to sneak into NASA/Ames, next to the offices of Airship 1 (it's really cool living someplace where an honest to goodness Zeppelin cruises the skies) and do guerilla video in the hallway.
With props.
I am amused to find that people want to know how I move (and don't expect that Teresa should recall my physicality from our single meeting, at a crowded party Friday evening of ConJose).
abi's first comment was that she now had some idea of how I move.
It was an honor. The squee at being told of the plan, the finding of camera; being able to plot, in person, with Serge and Kathryn (and without Kathryn, by strange circumstance, I'd never have met Serge), the hauling of props, all of that pales in waking to see the reactions.
Thank you, one and all.
Serge, she has given me many. Be she doesn't love you, for people she holds in close personal reagard (and esteem) she has been known to use a shoe to deliver those little love taps of adoration.
er... be glad (if such is your wont), not just be.
Happy anniversary, kids. Nice party!
I do SO hold Serge in close personal regard and esteem!
Only, I don't want to get a reputation for promiscuous shoe-thwappetting, so I feel I ought to reserve it for my long-term partners. Otherwise I would SO hit that...
... um, with a shoe. I mean. Of course. *innocent*
(n.b. for those who really want to see me move... there is a 10 minute clip of me speaking about interrogation. Youtube link)
TNH, 21: No, not yet--it's about half-done, I'd say. (See what thou hast wrought! My most recent pair of socks has bright yellow robots all over them.)
And... the funny thing: that was the first take. We did several. That was the only one where I did, "writing tips".
(Marna, Serge: do we need to get the two of you a room?)
And I am, as expected, thwapped.
:)
That's one of the sweetest things I've ever seen.
Happy anniversary, Patrick and Teresa! And thanks for this awesome place.
That was hilarious.
Happy anniversary, Patrick and Teresa, and many more.
It sort of makes you want to...
Yeah.
The pastiche
you were playing with in comments
we have made it real
We couldn't resist
It was so cool
and so delightful.
Awww, yay! Thanks for doing this for our hosts, you guys!
And Congratulations to the NHs!
Thanks to my friend Mick Cusimano for helping me with videoing my segment.
Thanks to the Brookline Puppet Showplace for being the only source of dinosaur puppets I could find.
Happy anniversary to Patrick and Teresa!
Oh Wow. I drive from London to Manchester (UK) and this is what's waiting when I arrive.
Happy Anniversary Patrick & Teresa.
And WOW to all who created this.
Happy Anniversary!
(grumble grumble stupid corporate firewall blocking youtube grumble grumble)
Happy anniversary. And thanks for all the light you've made.
Thank you to Ellen Klages, who filmed my bit.
Thank you to Abi for herding the lioness.
Thank you to Pendrift and Serge and everybody who made the thing happen.
And especially thank you to Patrick and Teresa, for being PatrickAndTeresa.
Happy anniversary, you guys, and many more!
Abi writes:

I'm visualizing Downfall Hitler, ranting against the proliferation of boomdeyada videos.
I look forward to hearing more "Making Of" stories.
This is the best conspiracy since that of the Bogdanovich and Shell, and then some.
Congratulations to every culprit, and the heartiest felicitations to Patrick and Teresa. Happy Anniversary!
To our hosts: Happy anniversary, with great appreciation for all the ways you've enriched my life and others'.
The conspirators:
This is just to say
That you have won
the internet
that is attached to
the flourosphere
and which
you were certainly
using
for this gift
Enjoy it
It is so illuminating
so vast
and so 404ed
Happy anniversary from a longtime lurker! Thanks to you both for starting Making light and to you plus everybody else for keeping it such a great place.
And of course:
I love that video,
It's such pure genius,
Boomdeyada Boomdeyada Boomdeyada...
In #61, TexAnne writes:
My most recent pair of socks has bright yellow robots all over them.
I just want to admire this fine sentence.
I wish I could see the video here, but I guess that will have to wait until I get home.
Happy anniversary, both of you!
Huzzah, conspirators! Well done, through and through.
Happy Anniversary, P&T!
Oh, wait, I have this fancy phone that lets me watch YouTube videos. That was excellent! Well done to all the conspirators.
Truly awesome!
Happy anniversary!
Wow. What an amazing tribute.
And happy anniversary, Patrick and Teresa.
Can't watch it until I get home.
Boodeyada!
Happy anniversary! And kudos to all the conspirators for an amazing piece of work.
Terry Karney @ 63... I am, as expected, thwapped
This remind same that, when you and Marna drove me back to where I had left my vehicle, the exchanges between the two of you reminded me of George and Gracie, except that you were both George.
argh... Should say "...this reminds me..."
Joeux anniversaire, Teresa et Patrick.
Happy Anniversary, Patrick & Teresa.
Having such conspirators to express our gratitude and pleasure . . . Wow.
Thank you all for doing it - and congratulations, Patrick and Teresa!
I seem to be a little late to this party, so all I can do is repeat the things others have said. Still, they bear repeating: Happy anniversary P&T! Thank you for creating this place. Thank you to Serge and abi for thinking this up and seeing it through -- I am pleased and honored to have been included. Thank you Lee (and her partner, who filmed us) for participating with me.
Happy Anniversary, Patrick and Teresa!
And a big slainte! to the conspirators.
Fluory goodness! Happy Anniversary to the hosts and a hearty "Well done!" to the conspirators!
Happy Anniversary Patrick and Teresa, and many more.
And to the co-conspirators - WAY COOL!!!
I love this corner of the 'net.
David Godlfarb @ 97... Thank you to Serge and abi for thinking this up and seeing it through
Most of the credit should go to Pendrift. If she had not written her ML version of the song in the Boomdeyada thread, we would never have thought of an ML film. Not only that, but Pendrift wound up editing the whole thing together.
We have the Best. Readers. Ever.
Best. Pastiche. Ever. Congrats to all!
And what SeanH said @18 - this is the ONLY blog I read.
Happy Anniversary - Ad multos annos.
Serge: Yes, I was just coming back now with the realization that I had slighted Pendrift. Pendrift, please accept my apology and my thanks.
So! Wonderful! This!
Happy anniversary!
The beers in my segment are, from L to R, St. Feuillien, La Cuvée des Trolls, Mc Chouffe, and Chimay Bleue.
Thank you, Fluorosphere, for making this possible. Making Light really is neat.
And please add my own thanks to Abi, Serge, and especially Pendrift! We were both delighted to be involved, as well.
You were terribly patient with us, and didn't even make fun of how meter-challenged we both were--since we were both pretty much stoned on Nyquil that week.
David Goldfarb @104: No offense taken whatsoever, and thank you for your contribution.
Happy Anniversary. This is spectacularly lovely.
This lurker supports you in email.
A belated Happy Birthday to Teresa, and a very happy anniversary to you both!
3:O)>
Further congratulations to the conspirators for a good job, well done.
What a very charming way to smash so many of my incorrect unconscious assumptions about what regular posters look like. ("IMHO you've totally miscast the film of Making Light! None of my favourite characters look like that at all!")
Heartfelt "Well dones" and "Happy Anniversaries" to be distributed appropriately.
Fantastic! Happy anniversary, Teresa and Patrick!
I just noticed the title.
I don't think you'll be denied an audience.
It is the fault of this website that my 4-year-old son made me show him every Boomdeyada YouTube video I could get to on my iPhone.
Pendrift @ 106: I was noticing those (of course).
So! Wonderful! This!
Happy anniversary!
Happy Anniversary to P&T! and Bravo! to the perpetrators!
Happy anniversary, Teresa and Patrick!
All you perpetrators/conspirators: OMG. Utterly amazing. "and the serial comma," and "AKICIML productions 2010"? *splutter*giggle*
Seconding everything everyone else has said, including the "they miscast the ML movie!"
Terry Karney @ #69, and Bruce Baugh @ 80:
*gigglefits* I knew there'd be at least one pastiche of that one...
("IMHO you've totally miscast the film of Making Light! None of my favourite characters look like that at all!")
Well, I'm not really that fat.
OK, I am, but I'm not usually that fat.
Well...I hope it's not going to be my new normal.
Steve with a book, 112: No, I'm pretty much made of yarn. Or at least I have some attached to me at almost every spare moment.
Yeah! What they sang!
And more calmly: congratulations to Teresa and Patrick; may you have many more years together.
And congratulations to the conspirators. That was a coup well-executed. And the way it was executed just goes to prove that we really do live in a global village. I like my neighbors in the village.
Glinda @ 118
At least you didn't get the blame for this one.

Those sorts of things are so much fun to do, aren't they?
Glinda @126
You might very well think that, this moose couldn't possibly comment.
3:OX>
(I still have the campaign map in the spare room.)
Wow, great job, you guys!
Happy Anniversary, Patrick and Teresa!
I am in awe of the conspiracy and the results.
Happy anniversary, Teresa and Patrick!
Cadbury @ 127:
There was a campaign map?!!?
(we should probably take this to email, mine glinda, the usual "at" sign, over on gmail)
Steve, #112: I think this is Internet Rule #16 -- nobody online EVER looks the way you expect them to look, when you finally meet them or see a picture.
I did manage to startle Fragano by hailing him by name at a con when we'd never physically met before, but that was because he uses a photograph for his LJ icon.
TexAnne @ 121... I'm pretty much made of yarn
Do you come unraveled when someone yanks your strings?
Avram and Chris doing their bit, unbeknownst to me, in the Tor conference room.
You'd gone home for the day. I checked two or three times to make sure.
Happy Anniversary!
Yes, Making Light is neat.
Happy anniversary, Patrick and Teresa!
Plus thanks to all the conspirators who created this very enjoyable video. (Even more enjoyable since I've caught more in-jokes and references due to the comment thread.)
Both the video and the conspiracy are very cool. I shall appreciate the coolness better when I get my &^*$)% sound working properly (again :-( )....
Steve with a book at #112:
What were some of your wrong expectations about what some people looked like? And other people's expectations too, perhaps?
There should be a thread where people guess what people look like and see if they get it wrong.
That was wonderful! Happy anniversary Patrick and Teresa, and congratulations on having acquired such fantastic conspiracy-minded regulars!
Happy anniversary to the both of you!
Serge #50:
Were your props some obscure pun?
Happy Anniversary! and all my best for a long time to come!
And seriously, y'all, give me a holler if something so conspiratorial comes up again. Several of you know how to get hold of me.
A brilliant idea well completed! Yaay.
Boomdeyada!
Erik, I feel certain they were, but I haven't figured it out yet...not entirely.
The left-hand one is a surge protector. I don't think I have to elaborate.
The other is a set of jumper cables. That's the connection I haven't made yet.
Happy Anniversary! I'm so glad you didn't take my advice all those years ago! Remember George Senda?
I'm glad we're all still around and friends.
When I first met Jo Walton face-to-face (at Minicon 36 in 2001) she recognized me, even though we'd never met or exchanged pictures. "You look like yourself," she said.
My own theory is that she had seen pictures of me taken at Bay Area rec.arts.sf.fandom gatherings (of which there had been one or two by then) and posted to the Web, and then forgotten about it, at least on the conscious level.
Xopher @ 142: The other is a set of jumper cables. That's the connection I haven't made yet.
As it were.
Erik Nelson @ 140... Xopher @ 142... Actually, the thing in my other hand isn't a jumper cable, but a flexible plastic clamp that Terry Karney uses with his photography equipment. I thought it'd look enough like a stupid Klingon weapon to emphasize the pun.
As long as we're confessing...
This deep into the comments, perhaps it's safe to admit that I don't get the title of the video.
Mr. Google says it has something to do with Thomas Carlyle.
Bill Higgins @ 148: It's a quote from Peter Blegvad's song "King Strut," as is "growing luminous by eating light."
It doesn't seem to be on YouTube, alas.
HAH! That was great. Nice seeing faces for the names.
Happy Anniversary T and P!
Tim at 149: Thanks.
I love the rocketry, annotated.
PNH @ 7: "Teresa is so stunned that she nearly tipped over the vat of confiscated vowels."
From their joyous timbre I gather they must be the post-rehabilitation vowels, ready to released back into the wild? Trollish vowels never had so fine a sound.
Thank you everyone: Patrick and Teresa for ML, and everyone who contributed to the video for such a marvelous *squee!*
It is a truth universally acknowledged that Patrick quote-mines that "King Strut". It's the source of both "growing luminous by eating light" and part of the final entry on Electrolite. Plus a few other things I've forgotten.
So when Pendrift was looking for something innocuous to title the video on YouTube, I sent her to the lyrics and suggested she pick something.
My "making of" story: I was filming multiple takes of it, and none of them were quite right. Then Fiona came in and asked if she could watch. But she was breathing somewhat loudly next to the camera, so the next take was a washout. I said she could only stay if she breathed more quietly.
It's amazing how much more one smiles when one is looking at a six year old with both hands clamped over her mouth and here eyes hugely wide, simultaneously entranced and desperate not to ruin things.
Fireflies and minor fifths.
Mosaic.
Anniversary happy.
Happy. Yes. Happy.
That is an evil idea.
You are going to do it, aren't you?
Popping in late to say congratulations to PNH and TNH on their anniversary yesterday (ah, the perils of being in the wrong timezone). Many happy returns, and may the happiness endure.
Another really neat thing is that, barring a couple of cases where suggestions were made in advance, participants were free to do what they wanted with their segments. And they came up with Really Cool Ideas.

Bill Higgins @ 153... Regarding the Collier magazine you can be seen holding, I think it led to George Pal's Conquest of Space. The latter is, as far as I know, the only SF movie in which Rosemary Clooney appeared.
in order:
1) happy anniversary, and many more to come.
2) thanks for running a wonderful community.
3) nice video. you're all sickeningly young.
Serge @159: It felt a lot shorter, didn't it? But the first email hatching the Nefarious Plot was sent on February 9th, the day the pastiche was written.
kid bitzer @161:
you're all sickeningly young.
This from someone named "kid".
kid bitzer @161:

well, abi, not every pseud on the internet accurately reveals its user's true essence. (or maybe it got my essence but not my age).
anyhow, here I thought i was conversing with a jury of my peers, and it turns out you're all just precociously wise, instead.

You're talking to someone whose previous (and still, elsewhere, current) nick was evilrooster.

* But not 165, which was too deep and wise for one so young as I to feel equal to replying to.
Regarding the Collier magazine you can be seen holding, I think it led to George Pal's Conquest of Space.
Yes, there is a direct line of descent.
The latter is, as far as I know, the only SF movie in which Rosemary Clooney appeared.
Alex Eisenstein was discussing Rosemary's performance in this film the last time I saw him. If you and h ever meet, you will have a lot to talk about.
1. Happy Anniversary Teresa and Patrick!
2. Wow, all you guys are cool! And brilliant, and funny, and serious.
3. I've learned a huge amount from the community, and I'm glad you've been patient with me. I'm sorry that seeing you guys is what it took for me to realize how real you are. I knew that was a risk, that I wouldn't realize that, and I thought I'd engaged in the necessary mental gymnastics to compensate for that, but I was wrong.
I'm sorry that I haven't brought my A-game commenting skills in the years I have posted comments to making light. I have had a few different noms on here, abandoning one and restarting with another after either revealing too much information that could be traced to me in real life, or more commonly, just saying something dumb.
I've learned a huge amount from all of you over the years - gained far more than I've given. At the very least I learned:
1. to always, always, check my sources, especially if it is something "everybody knows"
2. never, never, assume that someone else experiences the world from my point of view. I never realized how much I assumed that everyone is a white middle class protestant male just like me, until I got here.
Teresa and Patrick, thank you for having me.
Bill Higgins @ 169... Maybe at NASFiC, but surely in Reno next year?
TexAnne @ 61... My most recent pair of socks has bright yellow robots all over them
Domo Arigato, Mr. Robotoe?
@168--
but "evilrooster" might fit the "right essence, wrong age" paradigm if you're still an evil chick.
That turned out great! Happy Anniversary, a little late (I've been attending a meeting for two days).
I have to admit, I did try to video myself but I didn't have enough hands nor assistants..so I let the monkey stand in for me. It's better looking anyway. If I'd been thinking better, I'd have used my beanie Orangutan baby as my semi-doppleganger.
Kudos to Pendrift, Serge and the other co-conspirators!
abi @ 168, k.b. @ 173 - I figured it was an expression of distaste for being awakened at the crack of dawn. And perhaps a love of fried chicken that was not wholly coincidental.
Mark @175:
And perhaps a love of fried chicken that was not wholly coincidental.
Close. It was eggs.
We were discussing the Elizabethan saying about being as full of [thing] as an egg is of meat. Then the conversation did what conversations do, and it became as full of [thing] as an evil rooster is of eggs.
And I was just looking for a web id right then. So there you go.
You're all insane. Every last one of you. Brilliantly, lovingly, obsessively insane. Bless you all. Don't ever change.
When I decide to take a more permanent non-lurker handle I will of course disown this comment in its entirety.
Bill Higgins @152: I wore this helmet on my wedding day. (Long story.)
...Yes...? And...??
BTW, the overtext on your moon globe appears to be broken.
Happy anniversary, Patrick and Teresa!
(I love this place.)
Lee@132, Erik@137: Well, in this movie they appear to have given the part of Terry Karney to some child actor obviously too young to drink or shave; and Xopher is miscast because everyone knows he has very long hair (that was the first picture I ever saw of him, and first impressions count even when you're told they're misleading).
A diversion into the strange workings of my mind: 'Pendrift' somehow brings to mind the image of a dark-haired, handsome young Englishman of the late 18th or early 19th centuries—possibly this is due to lexical attraction from 'Poldark' and 'Pendennis'. I did know that our Pendrift doesn't fit the bill in any of these respects before I watched the video, but some sort of synaesthesia still forces that association, just for a moment. (In Russian, any first-person singular past-tense statement betrays the gender, or at least the purported gender, of its writer by the -ла ending of the verb: this must affect Russian-language online communities rather significantly—you either reveal your gender in the first paragraph you write, or you deliberately hide it, or you double-bluff it).
Steve WAB: I wonder if some people just use -ло and claim to be AIs?
I love Making Light
and all the people there
they know so many things
and have so much long hair
Seriously, I love being able to eavesdrop on the conversation, made up as it is of equal parts erudition and silliness.
I don't mind at all that you are all so much younger than I am. Everybody is, after all.
Yes, but are you older than kid bitzer?
@184--
a few are. fewer admit it.
@184--
a few are. fewer admit it.
I both laughed and cried, literally.
Happy anniversary, Patrick and Teresa — may you have many many more in happiness and good health, surrounded by people you love who love you.
And a big squishy hug to everybody else. *dabs at eyes*
Happy belated anniversary! And I'm sorry that the one day I missed reading Making Light (because of bring work home), I couldn't send you best wishes on time.
Steve with a book #180: 'Pendrift' somehow brings to mind the image of a dark-haired, handsome young Englishman of the late 18th or early 19th centuries...
Well, I get much the same image from the name (despite knowing she's female!), and I'd never heard of the other two names you mention.
Happy Anniversary(+1/365)!
One note for the MakingOfMaking documentary: the glowing rectangle held by my necklace is my telephonic device playing the original video.
Well, Kathryn, why do you think I decided to approach you to do the geekery line?
:-)
abi @ 176: It takes courage for a moderator to admit it when she's full of...thing. :)
Belated congrats to Patrick and Teresa, and what a wonderful video.
I'm all sniffly now.
Happy anniversary.
Keep threading lights into fuzzy warm intangible blankets.
PS: I'm amazed at how much most people in that video look the way I had imagined them (Serge being the notable exception, don't know why, was picturing him much stouter... beard was spot on though).
MD² @ 195... I am anything but stout, although I am ale and hearty. As for what other fluorospherians look like, may I suggest that you go here.
Serge @ 196: Kvass is dis? You can't beer to let even one little pun hop away?
Ginger, #197: Kumissed another opportunity there, I think.
Lee @ 198: Land's sake..I wonder rye I missed that! In any case, your schnappy comment certainly mead my day.
I miss a couple of days due to good, schoolish reasons, and I miss this! Way to go, conspirators.
Happy Anniversary, Patrick and Teresa.
Ginger #199: Vat's this, all you can do is wine?
I too have trouble keeping up lately, and my first day back brings me to this slice of brilliance... Wow, everyone!
A little belated, but Happy Anniversary to our Dear Hosts... {{{{hugs!}}}}
Fragano @ 201... Are you suggesting Ginger should grain and beer it?
Serge #203: It would be a rum deal otherwise. I think she should gin up, and not liqueur wounds.
Fragano @ 204: But then vodka do? Shall I sit in front of the computer, in a state of Hypnotiq daze, while Serge Curaçaos around with all the drinks?
This subthread makes me want to screech.
TexAnne @ 206... Don't. There's still hop.
TexAnne @ 206: ..do you mean, under the moonshine?
Indeed, Ginger--this is all a bit rum, what?
If we keep this up, we'll be de-port-ed.
Serge @211:
Yes, you be careful or we'll sling you to Singapore.
Pendrift @212
Wouldn't it be easier to drive him onto the rocks of Manhattan?
Serge, I can guarantee that Ginger will Maker's Mark. Pendrift may have to avoid a Mort Subite (or maybe she'd prefer it), and you will end up sadder Budweiser. I just want a ton of apples, or an Appleton.
Ugh. I got busy, and you've used up all the booze puns in my absinthe.
Happy anniversary as-though-posting-from-partway-through-the-Oort-Cloud to both of you!
Dave, belatedly
Fragano Legister @ 215 gets some serious bonus points for obscurity & relevance on that Mort Subite.
Before you know it, we'll all be up the kriek.
(I asked a passing duck about this, and it said "Kwak", which I assume was agreement.)
You people are a bunch of Beefeatists.
Don't you know there's a Bar on Terror going on?!
Sheesh, you're all just being very silly now.
Surely Serge's posting rate is a symptom of middle-class subourbon ennui.
Mark @ 224... middle-class subourbon ennui
...which has us for-sake everything, riced assured.
Any more rum puns, and I'll go into tonic seizures! Let's not get all cantanqueray over a few drinks; instead let's go sloe, mull our responses, and act lakka set of responsible adults. Serge, see where Pendrift is? Go, sit be-cider.
Ginger, did you plan out the seating arrangement in advance or is it ad hock?
I'm getting confused. My head isn't claret all.
Good heavens -- hang on, I'll be bock.
Serge @ 225: ...which has us for-sake everything, riced assured.
"Wheat a millet," she said, with a rye look on her face. "Are you sowing more corny puns?"
Pendrift @ 230: How quinoa say that? Of kasha does!
I am just a maized at the direction this is going. I was sorghum that everyone here would go against the grain.
That's because we love the punning. And the flourosphere recipe is right here.
The gentle chaffing is good, too.
I can barley believe my eyes...what a teff crowd we have here!
They were determined to millet for all it was worth, and in the end that spelt disaster.
Mark, you had some of that spelt disaster also? Someone could have gotten injerad.
You oat to to be better bread than that.
Serge@196:
a) I hope (or do I ?) it's my memory playing one of its usual tricks on me, but didn't we have *exactly* that very same exchange once already (which would explain the fact you all look the way I "imagined" you, I had actually seen you) ?
b) I knew as I was typing that pun would be made... but wow did you all sure give it legs... one of the reasons I love this place so much.
MD2@240: You know we'll always rise to the occasion.
Returning here out of nostalgia.
Hey, has the link to the video in question somehow disappeared from the original posting here?
(digging further...)
It's still in the page source, "http://www.youtube.com/v/pYe0CbyDM7I," but perhaps my browsers are not as Adobe-Flash-friendly as they once were.
Another way to find it is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pYe0CbyDM7I.
So I am still able to re-watch "Popes and Potentates." Hello, Fluorospherian friends, distant now in time as well as space...
