• Notes

  In Washington County, Virginia, until about 1815, when he begins appearing in White County, Tennessee. First appears in tax records in 1788, suggesting he was born in the mid-1760s or before. A handwritten note at the bottom of page 212 of the New York Public Library's copy of Doliante's Genealogical Serendipity (citation details below) says "White Co. Minute Book - 1820, p. 72, shows John Scoggin Sr., with others was exempted from paying the Poll Tax, thus apparently 60 yrs. old & born 1760."
