  • Notes
    • From his Find a Grave page:

John Cargile is buried on his farm, located east of Woodville, Georgia in the drainage of the south fork of the Little River in the eastern corner of Greene County.

John Cargile received a land grant on Jan 12, 1746 in Lunenburg County, Virginia for 210 acres on the Dan River. It is believed he lived here, raising a family with his wife Catherine Reneau Cargile (daughter of Thomas Reneau) until war broke out with the British. Catherine is believed to have died in 1774, and on Aug 20, 1776, John enlisted in the Continental Army. He served for three years in the 11th and 15th Virginia Regiments under Col. Daniel Morgan and Captain Porterfield. He moved his family to Georgia in 1786 to the property on the south fork of the Little River. John Cargile's 151-acre farm was sold in 1811 to Redman Thorton and this deed mention a griss mill which would have been on the Little River.

John and Catharine were the parents of four sons, all who moved west to Randolph/Jasper County by 1807: Charles (b. 1764), John Jr (1766), Thomas (1768), and Jason (1770).
