  • Notes
    • He emigrated in 1677 on the Kent and settled in New Jersey. He was a Quaker. John Clement (citation details below) calls him a "mechanic"; Lee (citation details below) calls him an "artisan".

In New Jersey, he was a slaveowner, and unusually among Quakers, he refused to free his slaves even after other Quakers turned against the practice. He was cited many times for this by monthly Meetings, and was visietd by committees of women lobbying for the slaves' freedom. A record of the Women's Meeting of Haddonfield, 8 mo. 1777, reads "28 slaves in the compass of Haddonfield Meeting freed, but, Jacob Jennings, Samuel Clement, William Cooper, Isaac Horner, Joseph Morgan, John Barton, Hannah Ladd, Elizabeth Mickle, not yet complied but appear uneasy on account of the Slavery of their negroes, Richard Matlack, Jacob Stokes, Marmaduke Cooper, Joseph Nicholson and Elizabeth Iredell seem not disposed to set theirs free."
