Notes - He was a Baltic German astronomer and geodesist, best known for his observations of double stars. The Struve Geodetic Arc, a chain of survey triangulations stretching from Hammerfest in Norway to the Black Sea, is named for him, as is the asteroid 768 Struveana.
His grandson Pyotr Struve (1870-1944), son of his son Bernhard Struve, was one of the first Russian Marxists and, in 1898, wrote the first manifesto of the Russian Social Democratic Labor Party. He left the party before its split into Mensheviks and Bolsheviks, becoming a constitutional liberal, and died in Paris in 1944.
