  • Notes
    • Said to have emigrated to Hartford from the west of England in 1635. He was an early settler of Wethersfield, Connecticut, where he is recorded as owning land in 1640. He was later among the first six settlers in Middletown in 1652, and was several times a deputy from that place to the Connecticut general court.

His surname was variously spelled Wetmore, Whetmore, Whitmore, Whittmore, Whightmore, Whiytmore, and Wetmer. It has been supposed on the basis of various associations that he was a son of the John Whitmore of Wethersfield and later Stamford, who was killed by a native American in 1648, but this is unproved.
