Notes - Emigrated to New England in 1637 with his wife Susanna, children Peter and Elizabeth, and a servant, Anne Goodin. They settled at Newbury.
He was not, as previously claimed, a son of William Toppan of Aiglethorpe, Yorkshire and his wife Cecelia. In 2007, Brandon Fradd (citation details below) showed that this claim, put forth in an 1879 article in the The New England Historical and Genealogical Register, had been based on baptismal records concocted by the notorious genealogical fraudster Horatio Gates Somerby.
