  • Notes
    • Or Crandle.

His parents are widely identified, at Find a Grave and elsewhere, as Capt. John Crandall (1779-1830) and Phebe Freeman (1785-1842), both of whom are buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Bristol, Ontario County, New York. Wikitree also mentions a family Bible record to this effect. We have in the past doubted this, because David Freeman Crandall's death record very specifically says that the last residence of his parents John and Phebe Crandall was Howell, Livingston County, Michigan. But a probate document for John Crandall of Bristol, Ontario County, New York, dated 14 May 1838, says that John late of Bristol died "about the 20th Aug 1829 intestate", refers to a petition by his widow Phebe Crandall of Bristol, and lists among his and her children "David F.", "now ten years of age," who "now reside[s]" in Bristol. On May 14, 1838, David Freeman Crandall would be one day short of 11 years old. The match is convincingly precise.
