  • Notes
    • Member of Parliament for Cambridgeshire in 1539. Ambassador to the court of Charles V in 1531-32.

"The historically-significant career of Sir Thomas Elyot as an author, lexicographer, and humanist is well-described elsewhere. Among the highlights of his career, he was clerk to the Privy Council, ambassador to Charles V, and a member of Parliament. He also wrote a Latin-English dictionary, considered his most important contribution; though his The Boke Named the Gouernour [Governor] is perhaps his most famous work. He was knighted in 1530. His wife Margaret was educated by Sir Thomas More, and both of them moved in his circle for some time. Chalk and ink portraits of both Thomas and Margaret, drawn by Hans Holbein the younger about 1535, have survived." [Kelly M. Keegan, citation details below]

Keegan notes that several sources claim that Thomas Elyot was born around 1490 -- these certainly include the History of Parliament and the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography -- and yet his parents could not have married until late 1495 at the earliest, and probably around 1496. So the date of "c. 1510" given by HoP for his marriage seems likely to be early.
