Notes - Arrived in 1630; first at Spurwink, then to Falmouth in Maine. In England he had been a vintner. He is described by Walter Goodwin Davis (citation details below) as "the patentee and founder of the seventeenth-century settlement which, after several changes of name, is now the city of Portland", and as "a well-known and controversial character in Maine's colonial history."
