Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Matthew Michell was born before 27 May 1735 in Zennor, Cornwall, England; was christened on 27 May 1735 in Zennor, Cornwall, England (son of Samuell Michell and Jane Stevens); died in Feb 1782; was buried about 28 Feb 1782 in Zennor, Cornwall, England.

    Notes:

According to Bill O'Reilly of the Cornwall Online Parish Clerks project, the original record of his burial really does say 29 Feb 1782, notwithstanding that 1782 wasn't a leap year and no February 29 occurred in it.

Matthew married Catherine Stevens on 3 Jan 1765 in Zennor, Cornwall, England. Catherine (daughter of Matthew Stevens and Katherine Curnow) was born before 30 Nov 1739 in Zennor, Cornwall, England; was christened on 30 Nov 1739 in Zennor, Cornwall, England; died before 13 Dec 1773; was buried on 13 Dec 1773 in Zennor, Cornwall, England. Notes:

Died at 34 from a fall from a horse.

    Children:
    1. 1. Jane Michell was born before 6 May 1770 in Zennor, Cornwall, England; was christened on 6 May 1770 in Zennor, Cornwall, England; died before 14 Apr 1843; was buried on 14 Apr 1843 in St. Ives, Cornwall, England.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  Samuell Michell was born before 28 Oct 1704 in Zennor, Cornwall, England; was christened on 28 Oct 1704 in Zennor, Cornwall, England (son of Samuell Michell and Hanna Daniel); died before 11 Feb 1769 in Zennor, Cornwall, England; was buried on 11 Feb 1769 in Zennor, Cornwall, England.

Samuell married Jane Stevens on 18 Feb 1728 in Zennor, Cornwall, England. Jane died before 19 Jul 1749 in Zennor, Cornwall, England; was buried on 19 Jul 1749 in Zennor, Cornwall, England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 5.  Jane Stevens died before 19 Jul 1749 in Zennor, Cornwall, England; was buried on 19 Jul 1749 in Zennor, Cornwall, England.
    Children:
    1. 2. Matthew Michell was born before 27 May 1735 in Zennor, Cornwall, England; was christened on 27 May 1735 in Zennor, Cornwall, England; died in Feb 1782; was buried about 28 Feb 1782 in Zennor, Cornwall, England.

Matthew married Katherine Curnow on 5 Jan 1738 in Towednack, Cornwall, England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 7.  Katherine Curnow (daughter of Robert Curnow and Wilmot Rosewall).

    Notes:

It seems unlikely, chronologically, that she was the Catherine Curnow baptized 24 Nov 1703 at Towednack, even though that Catherine's baptismal record identifies the father as Robert Curnow, and the 1744 will of Robert Curnow identifies his daughter Catherine as the wife of Matthew Stevens ("[T]o my daughter Katherine wife of Matthew Stevens of Zennor one guinea and the clock that she now hath"), because that would make her ten years older than Matthew Stevens of Zennor, and it would also mean that she and Matthew married when she was 35. Perhaps the 1703 individual was an earlier Catherine/Katherine that died young.

    Children:
    1. 3. Catherine Stevens was born before 30 Nov 1739 in Zennor, Cornwall, England; was christened on 30 Nov 1739 in Zennor, Cornwall, England; died before 13 Dec 1773; was buried on 13 Dec 1773 in Zennor, Cornwall, England.

    Notes:

He has to have died before 14 Jan 1724, when the will of his brother Robert Michell of Zennor bequeathes £10 to Samuel Michell, son of his deceased brother Samuel Michell. The only burial of a Samuel Michell recorded in Zennor before 1724 is on 13 Mar 1717.

Samuell married Hanna Daniel on 1 May 1697 in St. Agnes, Cornwall, England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Robert married Wilmot Rosewall on 30 Apr 1693 in Towednack, Cornwall, England. Wilmot (daughter of Andrew Rosewall and Mary Stevens) was born before 27 Jun 1670 in St. Ives, Cornwall, England; was christened on 27 Jun 1670 in St. Ives, Cornwall, England; died before 1 Jan 1742. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  6. 15.  Wilmot Rosewall was born before 27 Jun 1670 in St. Ives, Cornwall, England; was christened on 27 Jun 1670 in St. Ives, Cornwall, England (daughter of Andrew Rosewall and Mary Stevens); died before 1 Jan 1742.

    Notes:

Not mentioned in her husband's will, so presumably she predeceased him. Twin to her sister Margery -- the second Margery, the first Margery Rosewall having died young.

    Children:
    1. 7. Katherine Curnow

Generation: 5

  1. 28.  Robert Curnow (son of Thomas Curnow and Catherine); died on 27 Jun 1685 in Towednack, Cornwall, England; was buried on 28 Jun 1685 in Towednack, Cornwall, England.

    Notes:

"Of a total of approximately 15 inventories for Towednack for the period 1660-1691, that of Andrew Rosewall has the highest value with £354.8.6, the only others to approach it being: Robert Curnow £196.14.8, Francis Quick £159.3.4." [West Penwith at the Time of Charles II, citation details below.]

Robert Curnow willed to his son Robert Curnow "1 mare called Splat, a metal crock, a metal pan and the boarding in the loft over the parlour." Interestingly, he also willed to his son Peter "the tenament called Terean Rose, Amallwidden in Amalveor." Amalveor is a tiny hamlet three miles southwest of St. Ives. In December 1931 a trove of gold objects dated to the Bronze Age were discovered at Amalveor Farm, about a mile west of Amalveor church; these artifacts now live in the British Museum.

Robert married Catherine Painter. Catherine (daughter of Peter Painter and Jane) was born before 22 Jun 1632 in St. Erth, Cornwall, England; was christened on 22 Jun 1632 in St. Erth, Cornwall, England; died before 10 Jun 1708 in Towednack, Cornwall, England; was buried on 10 Jun 1708 in Towednack, Cornwall, England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 29.  Catherine Painter was born before 22 Jun 1632 in St. Erth, Cornwall, England; was christened on 22 Jun 1632 in St. Erth, Cornwall, England (daughter of Peter Painter and Jane); died before 10 Jun 1708 in Towednack, Cornwall, England; was buried on 10 Jun 1708 in Towednack, Cornwall, England.
    Children:
    1. 14. Robert Curnow died before 4 Feb 1744 in Towednack, Cornwall, England; was buried on 4 Feb 1744 in Towednack, Cornwall, England.

  3. 30.  Andrew Rosewall was born before 30 Nov 1636 in St. Ives, Cornwall, England; was christened on 30 Nov 1636 in St. Ives, Cornwall, England (son of James Rosewall and Elizabeth); died between 9 Oct 1680 and 9 Nov 1680.

    Notes:

On the Cornwall Online Parish Clerks (citation details below) record of his baptism, transcriber Kay Halley, noting that it comes from the Exeter bishop's transcripts, says "Name of parish torn off, and Mewan written in pencil, but the surnames make it doubtful if the entries belong to St. Mewan."

"Cornish Terrier," administrator of the Penwith Genealogy discussion board, comments on the above: "That 1636 BT is definitely for St. Ives. Yes, the corner of the page containing the name of the parish is torn away and 'Mewan?' is written in pencil but the entries are certainly for St. Ives people. The one piece of evidence that helps prove this is a St. Ives record is at the end of the document where appear the signatures of Thomas Jackson, Steven Barbar and Thomas Goode. Barbar and Goode were both active at St. Ives during this period but the key is Thomas Jackson who was curate of St. Ives at the time and who also signed the 1638 BT for St. Ives which still has the parish name intact."

Just before his death he was sued by John Hawkins, vicar of Lelant, St. Ives, and Towednack, for his refusal to pay tithes. Surviving records of this suit are reproduced in "Andrew Rosewall and the Tithes of Towednack, 1681," chapter XV of A History of the Parishes of St. Ives, Lelant, Towednack and Zennor in the County of Cornwall by John Hobson Matthews (London: Elliot Stock, 1892). Aside from providing a wealth of genealogically-useful information about Andrew Rosewall's neighbors and associates, these records also show the priest in question to have been strikingly neglectful of his duties to his parishioners.

Will of Andrew Roswall, yeoman, of Towednack written 9 Oct 1680; proved 23 Nov 1680:

6 daughters: Cheston, Mary, Margery, Willmott, Ann & Elizabeth, £20 each. Sister Mary w/o Hugh Rosemenewes, £20, and her husband shall have nothing to do with it, but it shall be for the good of my sister and her son FFrancis Arundel. Wife Mary the main profit of the land I hold in Uny Lelant, St. Just & Towednack. Brother James Roswall my wearing apparel; his 2 children (not named) 12d apiece. Father (not named) 12d. Godchildren 12d apiece. Robert Couch, gent. for making my will, 10sh. Wife Mary all the rest & executrix. [Signed] Andrew "A R" Roswall. Witnesses: FFrancis Arundell Jun., Rob. Couch.

He has to have died between 9 Oct 1680, when he made his will, and 9 Nov 1680, when his father made his will bequeathing 20 shillings to daughter-in-law "Mary Rosewall, widdow."

Described in his will as "husbandman."

From user Zenobia, post to Penwith Genealogy, 18 May 2007, citation details below:

Many online sources show the original Thomas Curnow of Towednack being born in 1588. This is based on a christening of a Thomas Curnow in St. Keverne in that year. Unfortunately, this seems to be a case of "The Name's the Same" Game.

An analysis of Thomas' known children show that this cannot be possible:

    1. Firstly, the Lelant Protestation Return of 1641 shows two persons called Henry Curnow. One of these would be Thomas' son Henry, named in his will. The other would have to be a grandson, presumably a son of the other Henry. Since no one under 16 could sign the ProtRet, the second Henry had to be born by 1625 or earlier. This means that the elder Henry must be born ca. 1600-1603, so Thomas could not possibly be born as late as 1588.

    2. Secondly, the Will of William Painter (1635) of Towednack, names wife Margaret and father-in-law Thomas Curnow. Thomas names six daughters in his will, and Margaret is named third. A son, Thomas Painter, was born to William in 1630/1, so his wife must have been born no earlier than about 1608. Another son, David is named in the will; he is underage, and Thomas Curnow is given as the overseer, so it is likely that David was older than Thomas (William Painter's father was named David). This would move Margaret back still another year or two, to about 1605 at the latest and she still had to have two older sisters (not to mention perhaps brothers); again, making Thomas' oldest child born no later than perhaps 1600-1604. So again, a 1588 year of birth for Thomas will not work.

    3. Thomas Curnow in his will names a son "John the elder" and another "John the younger". For quite some time John the Elder was presumed to be the John Curnow who settled in Gulval and married Johanna Vibert, while John the Younger was believed to be the husband of John Baragwanath's daughter Mary (J Bara's. will names "Mary C John Curnow's children, my grandchildren"). However, a will of Bawlden James of Zennor, dated 1610, named John Bara. and his wife and two children Mary and Joane, so we now know that John Bara's. children were born much earlier than we formerly thought. This makes "John Curnow the Elder" the husband of Mary Baragwanath, while John Curnow the Younger must have married Johanna Vibert. Since Mary Bara. was born prior to 1610, and her husband is probably a bit older, this too pushes the age of yet another of Thomas Curnow's children back to the first few years of the 1600s.

So all in all, it is quite impossible for Thomas Curnow to have been born in 1588, his true year of birth is probably closer to about 1570.

Thomas married Catherine. Catherine died before 7 May 1635 in Towednack, Cornwall, England; was buried on 7 May 1635 in Towednack, Cornwall, England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 57.  Catherine died before 7 May 1635 in Towednack, Cornwall, England; was buried on 7 May 1635 in Towednack, Cornwall, England.
    Children:

  3. 58.  Peter Painter died between 8 Apr 1670 and 20 Jun 1671 in Towednack, Cornwall, England.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Alternate death: 1671, Towednack, Cornwall, England

    Notes:

He was a yeoman. In his will he gave 1s to daughter Catherine, wife of "Robert Cornow of Towednack."

The record shows that his inventory was taken 5 Apr 1670, which has to be a mistake as his noncupative will is dated 8 April of the same year. Inventory taken by "Edmon Euren and Mathew Steevens." Will made in the presence of "Robert Cornow and Mathew Steevens."

Peter married Jane on 26 Nov 1631 in St. Erth, Cornwall, England. Jane died before 14 Mar 1679. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

From A History of the Parishes of St. Ives, Lelant, Towednack and Zennor [citation details below]:

Few Cornish families can vie with this one in point of antiquity. Though apparently never entitled to bear arms, the Rosewalls for countless generations occupied an ancient homestead called 'Rosewall' on the eastern slope of Rosewall Hill, in the parish of Towednack.

The Subsidy Roll of 1327 shows the name of John de Ryswal and Noal de Ryswal of Towednack, who paid 2s. each towards the royal aid.
In the roll of circa 1520 we find the name of Stephanus Roswal, having lands in Towednack of the annual value of 10s. Again in 1523 he is rated--this time at 10 marks; and the same in 1524. In the Penwith Subsidy of 1536, 'Stephyn Rosewarn' [lege 'Rosewall'] is rated at 10 marks.
In 1523 and 1524 Pascacius (Pasco) Roswall had goods value £2 at Saint Ives.
In 1546 'John Rossewall' was rated at £6 for his lands in 'Tewynecke.'
In 1585 Johannes Roswall was rated at £6, but in 1593 at £3, for goods at Towednack, and again at £3 in 1597.
In 1629 Georgius Roswarne ['Rosewall'] paid £4 to the subsidy for his goods at Towednack.
In 1641 'Willmus Russell' (i.e., 'Rosewall') was rated for goods, and Warne Roswall for lands, in Towednack parish.
In 1664 'Margrett Russell widow' was rated for lands in the same parish.

In 1573 Richard Rossewall was a capital burgess; in 1578 he paid 4d. to a town rate.

Circa 1590 Thomas Roswall paid 2d. to a town rate.

In 1620 Thomas Roswall, who resided in Westren Street, paid 3d. to a royal rate levied in Saint Ives. In the same list with the last name occur those of Nicholas Roswall, living on 'The Lande,' and George Roswall.

In 1636 James Rosewall was an overseer of the poor, and in 1638 he was a sidesman.

James married Elizabeth before 1635. Elizabeth died after 18 Feb 1681. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  6. 61.  Elizabeth died after 18 Feb 1681.

    Notes:

Her WikiTree page, managed by Pat Quick, states that the will of Elizabeth Rosewall, widow, of Borough of St. Ives, was written 15 Jul 1720 and proved 2 May 1723.
