Sarah French

Sarah married Jonathan Peake on 15 Aug 1660. Jonathan (son of Christopher Peake and Dorcas French) was born on 17 Dec 1637 in Roxbury, Suffolk, Massachusetts. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

1. Elizabeth Peake was born on 9 Aug 1680 in Roxbury, Suffolk, Massachusetts; died on 13 Nov 1747 in Dorchester, Suffolk, Massachusetts; was buried in Uphams Corner cemetery, Dorchester, Suffolk, Massachusetts.

Notes:

He arrived in Massachusetts in 1635 on the Defence, along with his wife Elizabeth and his children Francis, Elizabeth, Marie, and John. At the time of his emigration he was a servant to Roger Harlakenden (b. 1611).

Said to have been the first representative of Billerica to the General Court in 1666.

William married Elizabeth before 1623. Elizabeth died on 31 Mar 1668 in Billerica, Middlesex, Massachusetts. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

It appears likely that her birth surname was Symes. From Meyerink (citation details below): "[W]hen Sarah Simes, unmarried, died testate in Cambridge, 10 June 1653, her will mentioned several prominent New Englanders, but she only described two of them as her brothers (which term often also meant brother-in-law or step-brother). She also arrived on the Defence in 1635, age 30, with the French family and also as a "servant" to Harlakenden. There is no reason not to believe that William French married Sarah's sister. Proof of such a relationship, or that Sarah had a sister Elizabeth, has not yet come to light. It is, however, interesting that William French bestowed the name Sarah on two of his daughters, both of whom lived to marry."

William married Elizabeth Newes on 3 Jul 1603 in Bures St. Mary, Suffolk, England. Elizabeth (daughter of Arther Newes) was born before 9 Oct 1573; was christened on 9 Oct 1573 in Groton, Suffolk, England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

According to John Brooks Threlfall (citation details below), she was either a daughter or a granddaughter of William and Katherine Warren of Bures Saint Mary, Suffolk, more likely a granddaughter.
