    Notes:

    He was a goldsmith, probably an immigrant from France or the Netherlands. A deposition by his wife alludes to her being reviled by one Mary Combe as a "Frenche curres wyfe." (The spirit of Brexit is very old.) The autobiography of Sir Simonds d'Ewes calls him "a wealthy Dutchman, who came out of Normandy into England."
