  1. 1.  Thomas Stewart (son of John Stewart and Margaret Abernethy); died in 1361 in Dunbarton Castle, Dunbartonshire, Scotland.

    Notes:

    2nd earl of Angus.

"He commanded at the taking of Berwick in Nov. 1355, and was one of the eight Lords, of whom three were to place themselves in the hands of the English as security for the release of David II. He was Great Chamberlain [S.] 1357 and 1358. On 18 Aug. 1359 he had a safe conduct for four ships of Flanders, with which he was to join Edward III at Calais, but he broke his engagement, and in Mar. 1359/60 was charged to return to England to fulfil his obligation as a hostage. He married, by Papal disp. dat. 3 June 1353 (being within the fourth degree of consanguinity), Margaret, generally considered to have been daughter of Sir William St. Clair, of Roslin, by Isabel, daughter and coheir of Malise, Earl of Strathern, Caithness, and Orkney [S.], which Margaret was, however, more probably sister of the said Sir William. Being imprisoned in Dunbarton Castle, he d. there, of the plague, 1361. His widow married Sir John Sinclair, of Herdmanstoun." [Complete Peerage, citation details below]

"He acted for some time as Chamberlain of Scotland, but for alleged complicity in the murder of Catharine Mortimer, mistress of King David II, he was imprisoned in Dumbarton, and there fell a victim to the plague in the year 1361." [The Scots Peerage, citation details below]

    Notes:

"He opposed Bruce in the War of Independence, deserting the national party, perhaps, as Lord Saltoun suggests, on account of the enmity of many of the Scottish nobles which his father's crime had provoked. He became liegeman to Edward I, by whom he was favoured and trusted, and to whose interests, and those of his son, Edward II, he steadfastly adhered during his life. When Robert the Bruce succeeded in establishing his authority as Scottish King, the possessions of Sir Alexander Abernethy were declared to be forfeited, and he became to all intents an Englishman. He was afterwards largely employed by the English King in his diplomatic service he was on several occasions sent as ambassador to France, and in 1313 visited the Papal Court in the same capacity. His death probably took place shortly after 1315, in which year he witnessed a charter granted by the Countess of Atholl, and before 1317. His wife's name is unknown." […] He is often called 'of Bonkyl' in secondary sources. However, this is incorrect, as he died before his father-in-law, Sir Alexander Bonkyl, and therefore did not possess that barony." [The Ancestry of Charles II, King of England (citation details below)]

Also called Alexander of Dundonald. 4th High Steward of Scotland. "4th High Steward of Scotland, 1246-1283 and Baron of Garlies from 30 Nov 1263. [...] Councillor in 1255 to the underage King of Scotland, Alexander III, and one of the regents of Scotland. Upon his marriage he seized the Isles of Bute and Arran and as a result fought and defeated the Norwegians at the battle of Largs, in Cunningham, 2 Oct 1263, ceding the Isles to Scotland. In 1264 he invaded the Isle of Man which was then annexed to the Crown." [The Ancestry of Dorothea Poyntz, citation details below.]

"He seems to have commanded the armed force which, at Largs, in October 1263, successfully defended Scotland against attempted invasion by Hákon IV, king of Norway. It seems to have been in Alexander's time that the Stewarts acquired the lordship of Cowal, with a castle at Dunoon. Moreover, the style senescallus Scotie, 'stewart of Scotland', now replaced the older dapifer regis Scotie, 'steward of the king of Scotland', thus indicating a major office of state, significant in a national context." [Oxford Dictionary of National Biography]

Alexander married Jean Macrory. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

"One of the barons of Scotland attending the Parliament at Brigham who confirmed the Treaty of Salisbury with England, 14 Mar 1289/90." [John P. Ravilious, citation details below]

He is known to have been married to a Christiana, probably Christiana de Lilleburn, widow of Sir Thomas de Fenwick who d. 1275, herself known to have been living in 1318, but she was probably not the mother of his daughter Margaret.

Generation: 6

  1. 32.  Walter Stewart was born about 1198 (son of Alan fitz Walter and Eva); died in 1241.

    Notes:

Also spelled Walter Steward; also called Walter Fitz Alan. 3rd High Steward. Justiciar of Scotia (i.e. Scotland north of the Forth), 1232-1241. First to use Stewart as a surname.

"He was appointed Justiciar of Scotland by Alexander II in 1230, and negotiated that king's second marriage. He is said by Duncan Stewart to have married Beatrix, daughter of Gilchrist, Earl of Angus, but no proof has been found of this." [The Scots Peerage, citation details below]

The Complete Peerage entry for Walter Stewart's son-in-law Maldouen, third earl of Lennox (7:589-90), states without qualification that Maldouen's wife Elizabeth was a daughter of Walter Steward, High Steward of Scotland, by Beatrice, daughter of Gilchrist, Earl of Angus, but although no correction to this appears in CP 14, the corrigenda volume, it would appear that the modern consensus is that the identity of Walter Stewart/Steward's wife is unproved.

    Children:
    1. Walter le Stewart died before 1297.
    2. 16. Alexander Stewart was born in 1214; died in 1283.

  2. 34.  James Macrory (son of Angus); died in 1210.

    Notes:

"James, the son of Angus, had a daughter Jean, who married Alexander, eldest son of Walter, Steward of Scotland." [The Scots Peerage, citation details below]

The Ancestry of Dorothea Poyntz calls him "James of Bute" and says he was "[k]illed in 1210 in Scotland with his father and brothers by the men of Skye", which accords with SP's sketch of his father.

    Children:
    1. 17. Jean Macrory

  3. 36.  Adam de Bonkil was born about 1220 in of Bonkil, Berwickshire, Scotland (son of Alexander de Bonkil).
    Children:
    1. 18. Alexander de Bonkil of that Ilk was born about 1245 in of Bonkil, Berwickshire, Scotland; died before 1 Apr 1300.

  4. 48.  Orm of Abernethy (son of Hugh); died between 1180 and 1190.

    Notes:

Lay abbot of Culdee. The ODNB (citation details below) says he was a grandson of Gillemichael, who was possibly/probably earl of Fife in the early 1100s.

    Children:
    1. 24. Laurence of Abernethy died after 1244.
