At Westerly on 1 May 1716 he was charged with having "Illegally come into Town," but the matter was dropped. He was a freeman of Westerly 5 Mar 1735.

    Notes:

His origins are unknown. The earliest record of him is his marriage at Boston in 1662. He moved shortly thereafter to Windsor, Connecticut, and then to Springfield, where he was among the early settlers, owning the 15th lot.

John married Ann Canning on 30 May 1662 in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts. Ann was born between 1635 and 1640; died after 1687. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 9.  Ann Canning was born between 1635 and 1640; died after 1687.

In 1652 he settled in Newtown, Long Island, then removed to Suffield, Connecticut. His first wife was Joanna Williams, whom he married in 1659.

Said variously, and without proof, to have been a son of John Lawton of Lawton, Cheshire, born in 1582, and to have been a brother of George Lawton (1607-1693) of Portsmouth, Rhode Island. The latter's father was George Lawton of Cranfield, Bedfordshire, so both assertions cannot be true. The likelihood is that neither is.
