Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Samuel Price was born about 1693 in Deerfield, Franklin, Massachusetts (son of Robert Price and Sarah Webb); died in 1768 in Frankford, Sussex, New Jersey; was buried in Frankford Plains Cemetery, Augusta, Sussex, New Jersey.

    Notes:

He was taken captive as a child by native Americans in the Deerfield Massacre of 29 Feb 1704, in which (among many others) his mother was killed. Neither the exact duration and circumstances of his captivity, nor the manner in which it ended, are known with any great certainty, but it seems clear that he was a still a child when he was taken, that he lived among natives for a number of years, and that some of the period of his captivity transpired in Quebec, where, in keeping with the usual practice toward English-speaking captives, he was baptized into the Catholic faith and given a new name, in his case Louis.

A narrative by J. Kelsey Jones, author of the self-published Account of Robert Price of Deerfield, Massachusetts and His Son, Samuel Price of Frankford, New Jersey and Some of Their Descendants, a work of which we have been unable to find a copy, can be read on Samuel Price's Find a Grave page. (Among other things, it usefully disambiguates this Samuel Price with another Samuel Price of 18th-century New Jersey.) A summary of narratives and speculations from various sources about Samuel Price and his captivity can be found on the well-made WeRelate page for Samuel Price.
