    Notes:

His Find a Grave page reports that "Deborah Spencer has a family bible that states John James Evans was born 26 Feb 1826 in Liverpool, England."

He is said to have come to America with a company of Mormons in order to gain free passage. We know of no direct evidence for this.

He enlisted August 15, 1862 in Company “C” Fortieth Infantry Iowa Volunteers. He was mustered into the service of the United States on September 27, 1862, Camp Pope, near Iowa City. Service: Duty at Columbus, Ky., till March 3, 1863. Moved to Paducah, Ky., and duty there till May 31. Moved to Vicksburg, Miss., May 31-June 3. Siege of Vicksburg June 3-July 4. 2. 9.  Cynthia Whitaker was born on 2 May 1832 in Clinton County, Ohio (daughter of Sumeral Whitaker and Mary Bloom); died on 21 Dec 1896 in Washington, Washington, Kansas; was buried on 23 Dec 1896 in Greenfield Cemetery, Morrowville, Washington, Kansas.

    Notes:

    Also called Syntha.

From the unusual name of her son Willis Sumeral Evans, it seems circumstantially likely that she was a daughter of Sumeral Whitaker, who was born 12 May 1801 in Fairfield, New Jersey and died 18 Sep 1864 in Mahaska County, Iowa, and his wife Mary Bloom.

According to the research notes of Robert Evans posted 4 Dec 2014 to ancestry.com, the "1850 Census of Mahaska County, Iowa lists: John J. D. Evans age 24 bn England, cabinet maker; Cynthia age 19 bn OH, married with the year; Willis F. age 1 bn IA. (Two doors down in dwelling 753 are Jacob and Rachel John -- Rachel is Cynthia's aunt. Father Summerel is in dwelling 810 on page 214)." This would seem adequate proof that Cynthia Whitwaker was a daughter of Sumeral Whitaker.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Alternate birth: Abt 1809, Ohio

    Notes:

According to his Find a Grave page, the first school in Indianpolis (Iowa) was taught by Richard Mayberry.

He is widely said to have been a son of William Mayberry (born in Pittsburgh on 25 Jan 1776, died in Indianapolis, Iowa on 12 Nov 1862), and his wife Elizabeth Babb, but while this seems entirely plausible we have found no positive evidence for it.

Richard married Alice Moore on 14 Nov 1833 in Clinton County, Ohio. Alice was born about 1810 in Ohio; died after 1856. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Alternate death: Bef Oct 1843

  1. 16.  John Evans

    Notes:

Both his marriage record and the baptismal record of his son call him a "lathe cleaver."

    Notes:

Spelled "Summerill" on his New Jersey birth record.

Posted to familysearch.org, "Excerpt from Lucinda, a book of Lucinda Sarvis' memories as told to her granddaughter Mildred (Boddy) Reed":

A wave of excitement swept over the country with the discovery of gold in California. Sumeral Whitaker was caught up in it and left for the gold fields in May 1840. It took him 5 months to go from Iowa to California. A young neighbor, Ephraim Bowles, was anxious to make the trip. His father finally gave his permission to go under the supervision of Father Whitaker. The Indians made considerable trouble for the caravan. One night when Ephraim was on guard, the cattle were stampeded by Indians. Ephraim was killed and scalped. It nearly broke Sumeral’s heart to send this sad news back to neighbor Bowles. [...]

Sumeral kept a diary of his experiences, but it was stolen. Wouldn’t we treasure it if we had it now? He hunted gold with two men from Pennsylvania. They struck a find—a gold vein—and they staked their claim. I don’t know if anyone knows what he was worth when he came back in 1852 by the way of Panama and New York, but Lucinda said he was considered wealthy. He told of living on jerked steer and black coffee for weeks.

Sumeral married Mary Bloom in 1824. Mary was born about 1801 in New Jersey; died in 1856. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 19.  Mary Bloom was born about 1801 in New Jersey; died in 1856.

    Notes:

    Children:
    1. 9. Cynthia Whitaker was born on 2 May 1832 in Clinton County, Ohio; died on 21 Dec 1896 in Washington, Washington, Kansas; was buried on 23 Dec 1896 in Greenfield Cemetery, Morrowville, Washington, Kansas.

    Notes:

He and his family emigrated from Caroline County, Maryland to Ohio in 1818.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Alternate birth: 9 Sep 1775, Cumberland County, New Jersey
    • Alternate death: 11 Dec 1854, Clinton County, Ohio

    Notes:

New Jersey Deaths and Burials, 1720-1988, has him dying 11 Dec 1831 in Gloucester County, New Jersey. His Find a Grave page has him dying 11 Dec 1854 in Clinton County, Ohio, and shows a photograph of a headstone, allegedly his but illegible, at Vernon Baptist Cemetery in Vernon, Clinton, Ohio.

His Find a Grave page also, while giving the correct date for his marriage to Mary Summeral, incorrectly places the marriage in Clinton County, Ohio.

Frustratingly, Mildred Boddy Reed's memoir of her grandmother Lucinda Biggs Sarvis partially substantiates both of these. It says that Oliver died in 1831, but it also says that "Sumeral's parents" -- who were Oliver Whitaker and Mary Sumeral -- "had moved to Ohio where he was raised." It also says that Mary Sumeral came from Germany (evidently not so), and that when Mary died, Oliver married Elizabeth Kilby. Perhaps it was Oliver and Elizabeth that relocated to Ohio.

Oliver married Mary Summeral on 2 Feb 1799. Mary (daughter of William Summeral and Rhoda Biggs) was born in 1782 in Alloway, Salem, New Jersey; died on 18 Nov 1806 in Clinton County, Ohio; was buried in Vernon Baptist Cemetery, Vernon, Clinton, Ohio. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 37.  Mary Summeral was born in 1782 in Alloway, Salem, New Jersey (daughter of William Summeral and Rhoda Biggs); died on 18 Nov 1806 in Clinton County, Ohio; was buried in Vernon Baptist Cemetery, Vernon, Clinton, Ohio.

Solomon married Mary Tilghman about 1776 in Maryland. Mary (daughter of Joseph Tilghman and Nancy Harris) was born in 1751 in Somerset County, Maryland; died after 29 Jul 1820 in Pike County, Ohio. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  6. 49.  Mary Tilghman was born in 1751 in Somerset County, Maryland (daughter of Joseph Tilghman and Nancy Harris); died after 29 Jul 1820 in Pike County, Ohio.
