  1. 1.  Hannibal Dunn, Mayor of Saffron Waldon was born on 18 Apr 1797 in Ware, Hertfordshire, England (son of Hannibal Dunn and Elizabeth Newton); died in Mar 1857 in Marylebone, London, England; was buried on 6 Mar 1857 in West Norwood Cemetery and Crematorium, Lambeth, Surrey, England.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Alternate birth: 1800, Warwick, Wiltshire, England
    • Alternate birth: 1801

    Notes:

The 1851 census of England calls him "gentleman."

Hannibal married Mary Ann Hunter on 14 Nov 1838 in St. Stephen Coleman Street, London, England. Mary (daughter of William Hunter, Lord Mayor of London and Mary Ridley) was born before 1 Nov 1805; was christened on 1 Nov 1805 in Whiting Street Independent, Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, England; died in Jul 1871 in Kensington And Chelsea, London, England; was buried in West Norwood Cemetery and Crematorium, Lambeth, Surrey, England. Notes:

The familysearch.org archive "British Newspaper Archive" indexes a marriage of Hannibal Dunn, Esq. to Mary Ann, daughter of William Hunter, on 24 Nov 1838. The "event place" is given as Norwich, Norfolk. But the newspaper this appears to be drawn from is the 24 Nov 1838 edition of the Norfolk Chronicle, which makes us suspect that the 24 Nov 1838 date of the newspaper has been plugged in as an approximation of the date of the actual wedding, which according to the archive "England Marriages, 1538-1973" took place ten days earlier, 14 Nov 1838 at St. Stephen Coleman Street in London.

    Children:

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Alternate death: 1839

    Notes:

He was killed in the February 1838 sacking of Port Natal by the Zulu king Dingane.

Writing about Hannibal Dunn's grandson John Robert Dunn (1834-1895), a son of Robert Newton Dunn (1795-1847), Michael Green (citation details below) says that he "was born in 1833, either at Algoa Bay or Port Natal. His family settled at Port Natal and at the age of five he witnessed Dingane's sacking of the settlement (in which his grandfather was killed) from the brig Comet." As Colin and Barbara Pilcher point out on ancestry.com, John Robert Dunn's other grandfather, Alexander Biggar, died separately in a Zulu ambush in December 1838, so this can only refer to Hannibal Dunn.

Hannibal married Elizabeth Newton on 22 May 1794 in St. Mary the Virgin, Ware, Hertfordshire, England. Elizabeth was born in 1766; died in 1846. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Possibly the Elizabeth Newton baptized at Ware in April 1764, daughter of James Newton.
