Alexander married Elizabeth Pike on 17 May 1759 in Cane Creek Monthly Meeting, Orange County, North Carolina. Elizabeth (daughter of John Pike and Abigail Overman) was born on 19 Jan 1739 in Frederick County, Virginia; died on 31 Mar 1816 in North Carolina; was buried in Cane Creek Monthly Meeting Cemetery, Snow Camp, Alamance, North Carolina. Notes:

He and his wife appear to have moved from Pennsylvania to Virginia, then to New Carolina, where their certificate was received at the Cane Creek Monthly Meeting on 3 May 1758. After this they removed to Georgia, where they died.

Robert married Martha Richardson about 1732. Martha (daughter of Isaac Richardson and Katherine Gandy) was born on 23 May 1717; died on 20 Sep 1793 in Wilkes County, Georgia. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Alternate death: 20 Apr 1715, Chester County, Pennsylvania

    Notes:

He came to Pennsylvania as a servant boy. The first known reference to him is in the orphan court proceedings of 1697, which suggests that he was an orphan by that time. He may not have ever known the names of his parents.

Alexander married Mary Baily about 1708. Mary (daughter of Joel Baily and Ann Short) was born on 10 Nov 1688 in Chester County, Pennsylvania; died in Sep 1741 in Chester County, Pennsylvania; was buried in Bradford Friends Burying Ground, Marshallton, Chester, Pennsylvania. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 5.  Mary Baily was born on 10 Nov 1688 in Chester County, Pennsylvania (daughter of Joel Baily and Ann Short); died in Sep 1741 in Chester County, Pennsylvania; was buried in Bradford Friends Burying Ground, Marshallton, Chester, Pennsylvania.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Alternate death: Oct 1741

    Children:
    1. 2. Robert Stuart was born on 25 Jan 1710 in Kennett Township, Chester, Pennsylvania; died in 1783 in Wilkes County, Georgia.

  3. 6.  Isaac Richardson was born about 1681; died on 14 Oct 1726 in Whiteland Crest, Chester, Pennsylvania.

    Notes:

According to Gilbert Cope (citation details below), he and his wife came to Pennsylvania from Nether Walton, Cheshire. But according to Futhey and Cope (citation details below), Richardson "appears to have come from Lancashire." He and his wife settled in Whiteland, Chester County, in or before 1714. He was not a member of the Friends but he appears to have had his children brought up in that faith.

Isaac married Katherine Gandy on 10 Mar 1707 in Frandley Meeting, Cheshire, England. Katherine (daughter of Richard Gandy and Ellen Dutton) was born on 29 Sep 1681 in Cheshire, England; was christened on 5 Oct 1681 in Cheshire, England; died in 1746 in Chester County, Pennsylvania. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 7.  Katherine Gandy was born on 29 Sep 1681 in Cheshire, England; was christened on 5 Oct 1681 in Cheshire, England (daughter of Richard Gandy and Ellen Dutton); died in 1746 in Chester County, Pennsylvania.
    Children:
    1. 3. Martha Richardson was born on 23 May 1717; died on 20 Sep 1793 in Wilkes County, Georgia.

Generation: 4

  1. 10.  Joel Baily was born before 29 Jan 1658; was christened on 29 Jan 1658 in Bromham, Wiltshire, England (son of Daniel Baily and Mary); died between 9 Feb 1732 and 8 Apr 1732 in West Marlborough, Chester, Pennsylvania.

    Notes:

"BAILY, Joel, is said to have come from Wiltshire, England. Among the purchasers of land in Pennsylvania was Daniel Baily, of Westbrook, in the parish of Bromham, Wiltshire, weaver, who in 1681 bought 125 acres, which was subsequently located in Birmingham township. He did not come over, but Joel Baily, doubtless a relative, appears to have been concerned in the sale to of the land to William Radley in 1713." [History of Chester County, Pennsylvania, citation details below]

The above supposition appears to have been correct, as the database "England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975" on familysearch.org includes the 29 Jan 1658 baptism in Bromham, Wiltshire of "Joel Baylie", son of Daniell Baylie.

Wikitree identifies this Daniel as the Daniel Bailey born 1 Mar 1599 in Bromham, husband of one Mary Sullivan born 1601 in "Westbrook, Broomham, Wiltshire", a daughter of "[father unknown] and [mother unknown]. Based on exactly zero evidence this Mary Sullivan is called on her own Wikitree page "Lady Mary Bailey". Leaving aside this particular foolishness, it seems very unlikely that the immigrant Joel Baily was born to a 57-year-old woman.

Joel married Ann Short after 11 Apr 1687 in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Ann (daughter of Miriam) was born in 1666 in England; died on 9 Dec 1731 in Pennsylvania. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 11.  Ann Short was born in 1666 in England (daughter of Miriam); died on 9 Dec 1731 in Pennsylvania.

    Notes:

From The Welcome Claimants Proved, Disproved and Doubtful (citation details below):

    SHORT, MIRIAM, the elder: possible
SHORT, MIRIAM, her daughter: highly probable
SHORT, ADAM, her son: highly probable
SHORT, ANN, her daughter: highly probable

The three children appear on Lists S, T and V, and Ann Short is also on List Q. The mother has appeared on no previous list. The discovery that Ann Short was a passenger has been attributed to the late Dr. John G. Herndon. The proof is circumstantial: all three children are later found recorded in Pennsylvania or Delaware, and they were the beneficiaries of their uncle, Isaac Ingram, executed on the Welcome. It would be difficult to see how these two nieces and one nephew could be expected to profit from the goods Ingram had on the ship unless they were also present with him when he died. Moreover, the younger Miriam Short is recorded in Chester County almost immediately after the arrival of the Welcome, then married to the well-known passenger, George Thompson.

The reason for thinking that Miriam Short the elder, mother of the other three Shorts, was on the vessel is found in Ingram's will where she is described as "late deceased," a phrase peculiarly appropriate if she had started the voyage and then succumbed to the smallpox. She may well have been the Miriam Short, Quaker, of Kingsbury, Warwickshire, who in 1663 was presented in the Episcopal Visitation for not attending church.

    Children:
    1. 5. Mary Baily was born on 10 Nov 1688 in Chester County, Pennsylvania; died in Sep 1741 in Chester County, Pennsylvania; was buried in Bradford Friends Burying Ground, Marshallton, Chester, Pennsylvania.

  3. 14.  Richard Gandy was born about 1634; died on 31 Dec 1716; was buried on 3 Jan 1717 in Cheshire, England.

Richard married Ellen Dutton on 3 Oct 1677 in Cheshire, England. Ellen was born about 1655; died on 6 Nov 1729; was buried on 9 Nov 1729 in Cheshire, England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 15.  Ellen Dutton was born about 1655; died on 6 Nov 1729; was buried on 9 Nov 1729 in Cheshire, England.
    Children:
    1. 7. Katherine Gandy was born on 29 Sep 1681 in Cheshire, England; was christened on 5 Oct 1681 in Cheshire, England; died in 1746 in Chester County, Pennsylvania.

Generation: 5

  1. 20.  Daniel Baily was born before 14 Mar 1601; was christened on 14 Mar 1601 in Bromham, Wiltshire, England (son of Thomas Bayly and Anne); died before 15 Apr 1674; was buried on 15 Apr 1674 in Bromham, Wiltshire, England.

    Notes:

    He was a weaver.

Daniel married Mary. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 21.  Mary
    Children:
    1. 10. Joel Baily was born before 29 Jan 1658; was christened on 29 Jan 1658 in Bromham, Wiltshire, England; died between 9 Feb 1732 and 8 Apr 1732 in West Marlborough, Chester, Pennsylvania.

  3. 23.  Miriam died about 1682.

    Notes:

"The reason for thinking that Miriam Short the elder, mother of the other three Shorts, was on [the Welcome] is found in [Isaac] Ingram's will where she is described as 'late deceased,' a phrase peculiarly appropriate if she had started the voyage and then succumbed to the smallpox. She may well have been the Miriam Short, Quaker, of Kingsbury, Warwickshire, who in 1663 was presented in the Episcopal Visitation for not attending church." [The Welcome Claimants Proved, Disproved and Doubtful, citation details below]

Isaac Ingram's will describes the "late deceased" Miriam Short as "my Sister", which could mean she was born Miriam Ingram, but could also mean he was her husband's brother.

    Children:
    1. 11. Ann Short was born in 1666 in England; died on 9 Dec 1731 in Pennsylvania.

Generation: 6

  1. 40.  Thomas Bayly was born before 7 Mar 1567; was christened on 7 Mar 1567 in Bromham, Wiltshire, England (son of William Bayly).

Thomas married Anne. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 41.  Anne
    Children:
    1. 20. Daniel Baily was born before 14 Mar 1601; was christened on 14 Mar 1601 in Bromham, Wiltshire, England; died before 15 Apr 1674; was buried on 15 Apr 1674 in Bromham, Wiltshire, England.
