    Notes:

Sieur de la Livaudais. La Livaudais is a small village near St. Jouan des Guerets, about five miles below Saint-Malo.

He was a sailor with letters of marque -- essentially, a royally-commissioned pirate for France. He died when his ship L'Entreprenant was lost at sea, and a memorial service was held for him at the cathedral of Saint-Malo on 14 Apr 1698.

Jacques married Marie Marguerite Guillamette Lajaloux du Verger on 18 Dec 1695 in Saint-Malo, Ille-et-Vilaine, Brittany, France. Marie (daughter of Oliver le Jaloux and Guillemette Nicolas) was born in of St. Servan, Saint-Malo, Ille-et-Vilaine, Brittany, France. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

By around 1683 he was made Sieur des Croix, Croix being a place in Brittany. We don't have a death date for either Julien Esnoul or his wife Perrine Blanche, but their youngest child, Julien Hyacinthe Esnoul, was born 25 May 1687.

Gregory P. Livaudais (citation details below) believes that he was, like several of his ancestors and descendants, a sailor.

  1. 16.  François Esnoul was born in 1520 in Paramé, Brittany, France.

    Notes:

He is the earliest Esnoul who can be established as a direct ancestor of the line of Esnouls who were almost entirely sailors, but the records of Paramé and Saint-Malo show other Esnouls in the 1400s who were probably related to these:

    * Denis Esnoul, born 1426, was in 1488 an army officer in Saint-Malo.

    * Olivier Esnoul was born in the 1440s and married Marie le Franc of Isle et Villaine in 1467.

    * Olivier and Marie's son Guillaume Esnoul accompanied Jacques Cartier on his second (1535) expedition to what is now Canada -- as did Guillaume Sequart, brother of this François Esnoul's wife's father, Jehan de Sequart.

Also, this François Esnoul had a brother, also named Olivier Esnoul, who was born in 1525, and who married in 1565 Adrienne Apuril, whose father Betrand Apuril was also with Cartier on the 1535 expedition.

Cartier himself was from Saint-Malo, and his expeditions to Canada all set sail from there.

François married Jehanne de Sequart on 17 Sep 1559 in Saint-Malo, Ille-et-Vilaine, Brittany, France. Jehanne (daughter of Jehan de Sequart) was born in 1522. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Generation: 6

  1. 34.  Jehan de Sequart

    Notes:

His brother Guillaume Sequart was a companion of Jacques Cartier on Cartier's second (1535) trip to what is now Canada, during which they sailed up the St. Lawrence River, naming it, past where Québec City now stands, to the native village of Hochelaga, at which point Cartier climbed a nearby hill which he named Mont Réal.

    Children:
    1. 17. Jehanne de Sequart was born in 1522.
