  1. 2.  Ernest von Babenberg (son of Adalbert von Babenberg and (Unknown earlier wife of Adelbert of Babenberg)); died on 10 Jun 1075 in Homburg an der Unstrut, Langensalza, Thuringia.

    Notes:

"The Brave." Margrave of Austria. Genealogist Charles Evans proved that he was a son of his father's first wife Glismond, not of his second wife Frozza Orseolo, descendant of the Orseolo Doges of Venice.

    From Wikipedia:

He increased the territory of his margraviate by amalgamating the Bohemian and Hungarian frontier marches up to the Thaya, March and Leitha rivers in what is today Lower Austria. In his time, the colonisation of the remote Waldviertel region was begun by his ministeriales, the Kuenring knights.

Ernest received his epithet due to his fighting against King Béla I of Hungary and his son Géza I on behalf of their rival Solomon according to the chronicler Lambert of Hersfeld. In the commencing Investiture Controversy, he sided with King Henry IV of Germany and battled against the Saxons, dying at the Battle of Langensalza.

    Notes:

She may possibly have been named Mathilde.

In 1988 Charles F. H. Evans (citation details below) showed that Ernst von Babenberg is unlikely to have been a son of his father's last wife, Froiza Orseolo, sister of Hungarian king Peter Orseolo and a descendant of the Orseolo and Candiano doges of Venice, as claimed by W. H. Turton and G. Andrews Moriarty. Relying on the work of German historian Karl Lechner, Evans said Ernst was a son of his father's earlier marriage to Glismod, claimed by some to have been a Carolingian descendant.

On 27 Mar 2018 Peter Stewart (citation details below) wrote: "This supposed connection of Glismod (a sister of bishop Meinwerk of Paderborn) to the Babenburgs has been debunked—it was suggested by Karl Lechner in 1963 based on a bit of vague evidence and rationalising away contradictory evidence. There is no Glismod in the appropriate Babenburg tomb at Melk, and no mention of her anywhere that would even slightly support that had been a wife of Adalbert of Austria. His marriages are not certain—by September 1041 at the latest he was married to king Peter Orseolo's sister Froiza/Frowila, who was subsequently named as his widow. She may have been the mother of Ernst, but it is usually thought that this was a prior wife whose name may have been Mathilde (variously proposed, without firm evidence, as daughter of Ratpoto count of Cham or of Udalirch count in the Schweinachgau)."
