  1. 1.  Geoffrey III de Rancon was born about 1100 (son of Geoffroy II and Fossifia); died about 1153.

    Notes:

    Seigneur de Taillebourg.

"Geoffroy was prominent in the Second Crusade, having taken the Cross in Vezelay in 1146 together with King Louis VII and other knights. Having crossed into Asia Minor, in 1248 the Crusaders climbed Mount Cadmos, but Geoffroy disobeyed orders and chose to march further than the spot chosen by the king for the camp. In concert with Amadeo III, comte de Savoie (Louis' uncle) he decided that a nearby plateau at Laodicea would make a better camp, an act of disobedience that was reportedly common in the army due to the lack of command from the king. As a result the army was split and disorganised, and the Turks successfully ambushed a major part of it. The king narrowly escaped, and the blame for the massacre fell on Geoffroy. Louis sent him home from the Crusade early as a punishment." [Leo van de Pas, citation details below]
