Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Charlotte Towler was born in 1886 in Surrey, England (daughter of Charles Stephen Towler and Nanny Hocking Penberthy).

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Charles Stephen Towler was born in 1856 in England; died in 1889 in Surrey, England.

Charles married Nanny Hocking Penberthy. Nanny (daughter of James Penberthy and Elizabeth Hocking) was born in 1859 in St. Ives, Cornwall, England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  Nanny Hocking Penberthy was born in 1859 in St. Ives, Cornwall, England (daughter of James Penberthy and Elizabeth Hocking).
    Children:
    1. 1. Charlotte Towler was born in 1886 in Surrey, England.
    2. Charles Penberthy Towler was born in 1887 in Surrey, England.

Generation: 3

  1. 6.  James Penberthy was born before 10 Aug 1825 in St. Ives, Cornwall, England; was christened on 10 Aug 1825 in St. Ives, Cornwall, England (son of James Penberthy and Amelia Phillips); died about Nov 1877 in St. Ives, Cornwall, England.

    Notes:

    Miner; fisherman.

James married Elizabeth Hocking on 5 Oct 1848 in St. Ives, Cornwall, England. Elizabeth (daughter of John Hocking and Margaret Casley) was born about 1821 in St. Just in Penwith, Cornwall, England; died on 10 Apr 1902 in St. Ives, Cornwall, England; was buried on 13 Apr 1902 in St. Ives, Cornwall, England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 7.  Elizabeth Hocking was born about 1821 in St. Just in Penwith, Cornwall, England (daughter of John Hocking and Margaret Casley); died on 10 Apr 1902 in St. Ives, Cornwall, England; was buried on 13 Apr 1902 in St. Ives, Cornwall, England.

    Notes:

The record of her 1848 marriage to James Penberthy gives the two witnesses as Thomas Williams and Benjamin Hocking, and her father as John Hocking, miner.

The record of Benjamin Hocking's marriage to Amelia Rowe, 28 Mar 1846, gives his father's name as John Hocking, miner, and Benjamin's age as 21. Witnesses: William Rowe and John Tregear.

A Benjamin Hocking is recorded as baptized 3 Nov 1825 at St. Just, son of John Hocking, miner, and his wife Margaret.

On 14 Jun 1814, John Hocken of St. Just married Margaret Casley, both of them described as "of this parish." Margaret Casley is described as "spin.", meaning she was an unmarried woman (a spinster), not a widow. Witnesses: William Williams and Thomas Tragear.

A Margaret Casley is recorded as baptized on 9 Oct 1789 at St. Just, daughter of "Richd" and "Margt." Allan Casley's "Descendents of Gabriell Casly" lists Margaret Casley, baptized 9 Oct 1789 at St. Just, as the eldest child of Richard Casley and Margaret Warren.

Elizabeth Hocking had a sister Phyllis who appears to have lived from roughly 1825 to roughly 1902. According to "Descendents of Gabriell Casly", Margaret Casley had a sister Phyllis who was baptized 17 May 1795 at St. Just.

Given the good fit of dates, the repeating use of people named Williams and Tragear as witnesses, and the appearance of the not-overwhelmingly-common given name Phyllis in two generations in a row, we're inclined to believe that Elizabeth Hocking's parents were indeed John Hocking and Margaret Casley.

    Children:
    1. James Penberthy was born in Dec 1848 in St. Ives, Cornwall, England.
    2. Margaret Ann Penberthy was born in Sep 1850 in St. Ives, Cornwall, England.
    3. Elizabeth Jane Penberthy was born on 21 Feb 1852 in St. Ives, Cornwall, England; was christened on 22 Aug 1860 in St. Ives, Cornwall, England; died on 14 Oct 1933 in Saanich, British Columbia.
    4. Amelia Penberthy was born in 1853 in St. Ives, Cornwall, England.
    5. Mary Penberthy was born in 1857 in St. Ives, Cornwall, England.
    6. 3. Nanny Hocking Penberthy was born in 1859 in St. Ives, Cornwall, England.

Generation: 4

  1. 12.  James Penberthy was born about Jan 1793 in St. Ives, Cornwall, England; was christened on 21 Apr 1794 in St. Ives, Cornwall, England (son of James Penberthy and Mary Penberthy); died about Feb 1874 in St. Ives, Cornwall, England.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Alternate birth: Bef 21 Apr 1794, St. Ives, Cornwall, England

    Notes:

    Tin miner.

John Slee says that the actual image of the record of his 20 Apr 1794 christening, an image which is not available online, states that he was "age 15 months"; thus the estimate of his actual birth as "abt Jan 1793".

James married Amelia Phillips on 5 Apr 1820 in St. Ives, Cornwall, England. Amelia (daughter of John Phillips and Susanna Davis) was born before 31 May 1801; was christened on 31 May 1801 in St. Peter & St. Paul, Fareham, Hampshire, England; died about Aug 1865 in St. Ives, Cornwall, England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 13.  Amelia Phillips was born before 31 May 1801; was christened on 31 May 1801 in St. Peter & St. Paul, Fareham, Hampshire, England (daughter of John Phillips and Susanna Davis); died about Aug 1865 in St. Ives, Cornwall, England.

    Notes:

The 1841 and 1861 censuses say she was born in St. Ives. The 1851 census says she was born in Southampton, Hampshire.

The idea she was the Amelia Phillips who was baptised 31 May 1801 at St. Peter & St. Paul, Fareham, Hampshire (about fifteen miles east-southeast of Southampton), daughter of John and Susanna Phillips, is buttressed by ancestry.com's "ThruLines" feature, which shows PNH sharing DNA with descendants of three other children of this John and Susanna Philips (Joseph Phillips, 1809-1848; Susanna Phillips, 1812-1870; and Richard Phillips, b. 1821).

    Notes:

Witnesses: Amelia Phillips (presumably the bride's father's sister), Thomas Williams.

    Children:
    1. 6. James Penberthy was born before 10 Aug 1825 in St. Ives, Cornwall, England; was christened on 10 Aug 1825 in St. Ives, Cornwall, England; died about Nov 1877 in St. Ives, Cornwall, England.

  3. 14.  John Hocking was born before 1 Apr 1788; was christened on 1 Apr 1798 in St. Just in Penwith, Cornwall, England (son of Joseph Hocking and Ann Mann); died before 8 Jan 1847; was buried on 8 Jan 1847 in St. Just in Penwith, Cornwall, England.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Alternate birth: Abt 1791

    Notes:

He was a miner. He and his wife Margaret appear in the 1841 census of England, living in St. Just with their children James, 20; Phyllis, 15; Benjamin, 15; Mary, 12; William, 10; and Richard, 8.

John married Margaret Casley on 14 Jun 1814 in St. Just in Penwith, Cornwall, England. Margaret (daughter of Richard Casley and Margaret Warren) was born before 9 Oct 1789; was christened on 9 Oct 1789 in St. Just in Penwith, Cornwall, England; died before 5 Mar 1844; was buried on 5 Mar 1844 in St. Just in Penwith, Cornwall, England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 15.  Margaret Casley was born before 9 Oct 1789; was christened on 9 Oct 1789 in St. Just in Penwith, Cornwall, England (daughter of Richard Casley and Margaret Warren); died before 5 Mar 1844; was buried on 5 Mar 1844 in St. Just in Penwith, Cornwall, England.
    Children:
    1. 7. Elizabeth Hocking was born about 1821 in St. Just in Penwith, Cornwall, England; died on 10 Apr 1902 in St. Ives, Cornwall, England; was buried on 13 Apr 1902 in St. Ives, Cornwall, England.
    2. James Hocking was born about 1821 in St. Just in Penwith, Cornwall, England.

    4. Benjamin Hocking was born before 3 Nov 1825; was christened on 3 Nov 1825 in St. Just in Penwith, Cornwall, England.
    5. Mary Hocking was born about 1829 in St. Just in Penwith, Cornwall, England.
    6. William Hocking was born about 1831 in St. Just in Penwith, Cornwall, England.
    7. Richard Hocking was born about 1833 in St. Just.

Generation: 5

  1. 24.  James Penberthy was born before 20 Jul 1755 in St. Ives, Cornwall, England; was christened on 20 Jul 1755 in St. Ives, Cornwall, England (son of Simon Penberthy and Ann Daniell).

    Notes:

    Yeoman.

James married Mary Penberthy on 27 Feb 1783 in St. Ives, Cornwall, England. Mary (daughter of John Penberthy and Margery Daniell) was born before 3 Jun 1754; was christened on 3 Jun 1754 in St. Ives, Cornwall, England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 25.  Mary Penberthy was born before 3 Jun 1754; was christened on 3 Jun 1754 in St. Ives, Cornwall, England (daughter of John Penberthy and Margery Daniell).

    Notes:

She may be the Mary Penberthy baptized at St. Ives on 3 Jun 1754, daughter of John and Margery Penberthy. This is obviously an acceptable fit for the Mary Penberthy who married James Penberthy (bapt. 1755) in 1783.

A Mary Penberthy married Thomas Champion at St. Ives on 21 May 1775, and Mary Champion was buried at St. Ives on 2 Dec 1818, age 65, suggesting that perhaps the Mary Penberthy baptized in 1754 was Thomas Champion's wife, not James Penberthy's. But another Mary Penberthy was baptized at St. Ives on 1 Jan 1753, daughter of Simon and Mary, making this Mary Penberthy 65 years and 11 months old in December 1818. We think this latter one was Thomas Champion's wife and that the 3 Jun 1754 baptism pertains to the wife of James Penberthy.

    Children:
    1. 12. James Penberthy was born about Jan 1793 in St. Ives, Cornwall, England; was christened on 21 Apr 1794 in St. Ives, Cornwall, England; died about Feb 1874 in St. Ives, Cornwall, England.

  3. 26.  John Phillips was born about 1768; died on 30 Mar 1852 in St. Ives, Cornwall, England.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Alternate birth: Abt 1770, St. Ives, Cornwall, England
    • Alternate death: Aft 1851, St. Ives, Cornwall, England
    • Alternate death: Between Oct 1853 and Dec 1853, Cornwall, England

    Notes:

The 1841 census records a Susan Phillip, age 55 and thus born 1786, living at St. Ives in a household that also includes Susan Chapman, 25, and George Chapman, 1.

The 1851 census records a John Phillips, age 81 and thus born 1770, living at St. Ives in a household that also includes Susan Chapman, 33, and George Chapman, 12.

John married Susanna Davis on 28 Jul 1799 in Ringwood, Hampshire, England. Susanna (daughter of Samuel Davis and Mary Brock) was born before 26 Dec 1780; was christened on 26 Dec 1780 in Ringwood, Hampshire, England; died before 12 Jan 1849; was buried on 12 Jan 1849 in St. Ives, Cornwall, England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 27.  Susanna Davis was born before 26 Dec 1780; was christened on 26 Dec 1780 in Ringwood, Hampshire, England (daughter of Samuel Davis and Mary Brock); died before 12 Jan 1849; was buried on 12 Jan 1849 in St. Ives, Cornwall, England.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Alternate birth: Abt 1786

    Notes:

It's possible that she was the Susanna Davis baptized 17 Feb 1788 at Portsmouth St. Thomas, daughter of Joseph and Ann Davis.

But we're inclined to agree with "malphillips1" on ancestry.com (with whom PNH has a DNA match), who posted the following there:
    John and Susanna

Who were they? More exactly who was Susanna?

There are several theories about the identity of Susannah -- including one naming her as Susannah Crocker of Gorran, and another as the daughter of Jane Richards at Lelant.

The identification of Susannah as being Susanna Richards was on the advice of the St Ives Family History Centre. Their suggestion was that Susanna was illegitimate and lived in the Lelant area.

Baptism: 28 May 1772 in St. Ives, Cornwall, England; Lived at Lelant. 'Base daughter'

It has the merit of being geographically close to St Ives and the year of her baptism looks quite possible, but there is an alternative option which I think is more persuasive.

Over the years I've changed my view away from naming her as Susanna Richards from Cornwall -- to instead regarding her as Susanna Davis from Hampshire.

There is a marriage record for John Phillips and Susanna Davis at Ringwood in Hampshire in 1799.

Later (in 1801) we have the baptism of Amelia Phillips at Fareham in Hampshire.

An Amelia Phillips born in Hampshire, appears in a later census for the St Ives area.

Again in St Ives, John and Susanna Phillips have a daughter called Hannah Davis Phillips.

Going back a generation to John and Mary Phillips at St Ives (who are the likely parents of the John Phillips who married Susanna), they too have a daughter called Amelia. When one of the two Amelias is married, the other Amelia is apparently recorded as a witness on the marriage record.

The existence of the two Amelias with this family link has been the deciding factor for me.

The missing part of the puzzle is why John Phillips should be in Hampshire. It is possible this had something to do with the war with France. An invasion was expected, and both Fareham and Ringwood would be strategically important places to defend.

    Children:
    1. 13. Amelia Phillips was born before 31 May 1801; was christened on 31 May 1801 in St. Peter & St. Paul, Fareham, Hampshire, England; died about Aug 1865 in St. Ives, Cornwall, England.

  5. 28.  Joseph Hocking died before 23 Apr 1797; was buried on 23 Apr 1797 in St. Just in Penwith, Cornwall, England.

Joseph married Ann Mann on 1 Sep 1766 in Paul, Penzance, Penwith, Cornwall, England. Ann (daughter of William Mann and Ann) was born before 24 Feb 1743; was christened on 24 Feb 1743 in Paul, Penzance, Penwith, Cornwall, England; died before 20 Aug 1813; was buried on 20 Aug 1813 in St. Just in Penwith, Cornwall, England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  6. 29.  Ann Mann was born before 24 Feb 1743; was christened on 24 Feb 1743 in Paul, Penzance, Penwith, Cornwall, England (daughter of William Mann and Ann); died before 20 Aug 1813; was buried on 20 Aug 1813 in St. Just in Penwith, Cornwall, England.

    Notes:

Her burial record gives her age as 73, suggesting she may have been born three years before her baptism.

    Children:
    1. 14. John Hocking was born before 1 Apr 1788; was christened on 1 Apr 1798 in St. Just in Penwith, Cornwall, England; died before 8 Jan 1847; was buried on 8 Jan 1847 in St. Just in Penwith, Cornwall, England.

  7. 30.  Richard Casley was born before 1 Nov 1762; was christened on 1 Nov 1762 in St. Just in Penwith, Cornwall, England (son of Thomas Casley and Mary Warren); died before 17 Feb 1813; was buried on 17 Feb 1813 in St. Just in Penwith, Cornwall, England.

    Notes:

Witnesses to his marriage to Margaret Warren: Nicholas Reseigh and John Lanyon.

Richard married Margaret Warren on 30 May 1789 in St. Just in Penwith, Cornwall, England. Margaret was born about 1771; died in Sep 1849 in Penzance, Cornwall, England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  8. 31.  Margaret Warren was born about 1771; died in Sep 1849 in Penzance, Cornwall, England.

    Notes:

Earliest known direct maternal ancestor of PNH. The record of her marriage to Richard Casley in St. Just describes her as "of this parish."

The birth year of 1771 is extrapolated from the fact that the 1841 census reports her as aged 70. A Margaret Warren was baptized on 7 Aug 1771 in Helston, Cornwall, plausibly close enough to Penzance and to St. Just in Penwith, a daughter of William and Blanch Warren.

    Children:
    1. 15. Margaret Casley was born before 9 Oct 1789; was christened on 9 Oct 1789 in St. Just in Penwith, Cornwall, England; died before 5 Mar 1844; was buried on 5 Mar 1844 in St. Just in Penwith, Cornwall, England.
