His widow withheld the will for a time, and what is described as "an interesting controversy" took place before it was probated. Emigrated in 1631 with his parents and brothers. Settled at Roxbury, Massachusetts. Married Bridget Thompson, 1641. She died two years later, whereupon he returned to England to take up arms for Parliament. Was injured and (possibly) captured and escaped, a sequence of events that somehow resulted in him returning to Massachusetts in 1645 with a second wife, Ann Borodell. Removed to New London, 1651; served on the New London war committees in 1653 and 1654, when the Dutch threatened war. Removed to Stonington, 1654. Two decades later, we find him as captain of the New London County forces in King Philip's War, where he fought in and survived the Great Swamp Fight in Rhode Island, 19 Dec 1675. In 1676 he is "Provo-Marshall" of New London, pursuing remnants of the Narragansett and Wampanaug. He captured Chief Canonchet and worked with Pequot chiefs to "control the remnant of their tribe."

"We would premise, that William Denison, came to Roxbury, Mass., in company with Rev. John Eliot, in 1631, bringing with him his wife and three sons, Daniel, Edward and George. The last named married in 1640, Bridget Thompson, supposed to have been a sister of Rev. William Thompson, of Braintree. His wife died in 1643. Mr. Denison visited his native country the same year, 'and engaged in the civil conflict with which the kingdom was convulsed.' On his return to this country, about two years afterwards, he brought with him his second wife, Ann, daughter of John Borrowdale, or Borrodel, of Cork, Ireland. Mr. D. emigrated to Connecticut as early as 1651, and in 1654 settled in what is now Stonington, to which the name of Southerton was given in 1658, when the territory was annexed to the County of Suffolk, Mass. He filled acceptably many offices of public trust, and was particularly distinguished as a leader in King Philip's war. He died at Hartford, Oct. 23d, 1694, during the session of the General Court, and was there buried. His age, according to the inscription on his grave stone, was 76." [Introduction to "Will of George Denison,--1693", New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Volume 13, 1859, p. 73.]

"My Brother George buried his first Wife in the year 1643, went to England, was a soldier there about a year, was at the Battle of York or Marston Moor where he did good service, was afterward taken prisoner, but got free, and having married a second Wife, he returned to New England the year before our Mother died, and not long afterward removed himself to New London, near whereunto at Stonington he now liveth." From the Wikipedia article about John Strong:

John Strong (1610-1699) was an English-born New England colonist, politician, Puritan church leader, tanner and one of the founders of Windsor, Connecticut and Northampton, Massachusetts as well as the progenitor of nearly all the Strong families in what is now the United States. Often referred to as Elder John Strong to help tell him apart from his son, John Strong Jr., also present in New England in this same period.

John Strong was born in England in about 1610 in Chard, Somerset, England and emigrated to Massachusetts with his pregnant wife and a one year old child in 1635 aboard the sailing ship Hopewell. During the 70-day sea voyage, his wife, Marjory Deane (md. 1632) had a baby while they were still at sea. She and their infant child died within two months of their arrival. With a one year old son to take care of, John Strong Jr., in December of 1635 John Sr. married sixteen year old Mary & John (1630) passenger Abigail Ford, daughter of Thomas Ford and Elizabeth Charde. They settled originally in Hingham, Massachusetts, in 1635. In 1638 he was made a "Freeman" (eligible to vote in town and colony elections and serve in the church), and went to Taunton, Massachusetts. While in Taunton, Strong represented the town in the General Court of Plymouth Colony for four years, from 1641 to 1644.

He later moved to Windsor, Connecticut, on the Connecticut River where he was a leading figure in the new Connecticut colony. In 1659 he moved 40 miles further up the river to the Connecticut River town of Northampton, Massachusetts--then a frontier town surrounded by Indians about 100 miles (160 km) inland from Boston. One of the early settlers of the town, he operated a tannery for many years, helped defend the town against Indian attacks during King Philip's War (1675-1676) and also played an important role in town and church affairs.

In 1661, John Strong was one of the eight men who founded the First Church of Northampton. Of their number, Eleazer Mather, the older brother of Boston minister Increase Mather, was chosen as the first pastor. Two years later, 1663, Strong was ordained an elder of the church. The Puritan pastor Mather died in 1669, and Strong was tasked with finding a suitable minister to replace him. The following year, he and several other church leaders extended a call to Solomon Stoddard, who formally accepted in 1672, and was ordained by John Strong. Stoddard served as pastor for many years, until his death in 1729, and was succeeded by his grandson, Jonathan Edwards, whose subsequent ministry in Northampton would play a major role in the Great Awakening.

John Strong died on April 14, 1699, at Northampton and is buried at the Bridge Street Cemetery, Northampton, Massachusetts.
