  1. 1.  Madeleine Cole was born on 9 Oct 1698 in Beverly, Essex, Massachusetts; was christened on 8 Dec 1703 in Montréal, Québec (daughter of Joseph Cole and Sarah Randall); died before 30 Apr 1744; was buried on 30 Apr 1744 in Boucherville, Québec.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Alternate birth: 19 Oct 1698, Beverly, Essex, Massachusetts

    Notes:

Originally Deborah Cole, she was taken in a raid on Saco, Maine in August 1703. In Montrèal in December of that year, she was baptized into the Catholic church and renamed Madeleine. We know the date and place of her birth from French records of her capture.

Madeleine married Simon Séguin dit Ladéroute on 11 Nov 1715 in Boucherville, Québec. Simon (son of François Séguin dit Ladéroute and Jeanne Petit) was born before 24 Sep 1684; was christened on 24 Sep 1684 in Pointe-aux-Trembles, Québec; died before 29 Mar 1758; was buried on 29 Mar 1758 in Boucherville, Québec. 1. 2.  Joseph Cole died on 10 Aug 1703 in Saco, York, Maine.

    Notes:

His parentage is unknown. He was killed in the raid on Saco on 10 Aug 1703, and his wife Sarah and his three daughters were taken, either in that raid or one immediately following. His wife and all three daughters were subsequently baptized into the Catholic church in Montréal, one of them posthumously. On baptism, Sarah became Marie-Catherine and Deborah became Madeleine (sometimes said to have been Marie-Madeleine). According to several sources, Sarah eventually returned to New England, but we've been unable to confirm this.

Joseph married Sarah Randall before 1698 in Beverly, Essex, Massachusetts. Sarah was born about 1661 in Saco, York, Maine; was christened on 27 Apr 1704 in Boucherville, Québec. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  Sarah Randall was born about 1661 in Saco, York, Maine; was christened on 27 Apr 1704 in Boucherville, Québec.

    Notes:

See her husband's entry for the main story. It is notable that we know her birth surname, Randall, only from the French record of her captivity; her parentage is otherwise unknown, although the subject of several easily-disproved conjectures.
