    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Alternate death: 4 Dec 1688, Windsor, Hartford, Connecticut

    Notes:

First seen in 1639, at Hartford. He appears to have been an original Hartford proprietor; his name is on the Founders Monument in downtown Hartford. Moore and Allied Families (citation details below) says "it is generally believed" that he arrived at Hartford in 1636 with the Rev. Hooker's party, but while this is plausible there exists no known evidence to confirm it.

The Hartford land distribution of Feb 1640 shows that he was given several parcels of land by the Rev. Samuel Stone, so it is notable that later, in 1659, he was one of those who protested Stone's appointment as Hartford minister and who removed to Hadley as a result. In 1661 he removed to Northampton. He may or may not have been a personal friend of the Rev. Stone, but he was the son-in-law of former Connecticut governor John Webster, a leading figure in the protests against the Rev. Stone, and blood is often thicker than water.

Moore and Allied Families says that he died in Windsor, Connecticut, "where he was probably visiting his daughter, Hannah Loomis." His page at the Society of the Descendants of the Founders of Hartford says that he died in Hartford.

John married Anne Webster about 1642. Anne (daughter of John Webster, Governor of Connecticut and Agnes Smith) was born before 29 Jul 1621; was christened on 29 Jul 1621 in Cossington, Leicestershire, England; died on 9 Jun 1662 in Hadley, Hampshire, Massachusetts. Notes:

Emigrated in 1635; first at Watertown, then in 1636 to Hartford, probably with the Rev. Hooker's party. His name is on the Founders Monument in downtown Hartford.

His gravestone at Old Hadley cemetery was erected in 1818 by his descendant Noah Webster, the lexicographer, and gives the year of his death, incorrectly, as 1665.

From Timothy Lester Jacobs at the Founders of Hartford site:

He became an Assistant to the Connecticut General Court in 1639, which office he held until 1655. He was a Commissioner to the United Colonies of New England in 1654. He became Deputy Governor of Connecticut in 1655, then Governor in 1656. In 1657 he was named as Chief Magistrate.

He was among the dissenters against Samuel Stone becoming Hartford’s minister in 1659, and he left shortly after that as one of the leaders of the Hadley Company, although he first resided in Northampton, Massachusetts. He later removed to Hadley, where he was made a magistrate in May 1660, dying the next year on 5 April 1661.
