    Notes:

    He was admitted a burgher of Hamburg on 14 Aug 1646, but in 1647 he emigrated from Hamburg to Barbados, where he married his first wife Ann Hill. In 1648 he migrated from Barbados to Rhode Island with his wife, her brother Robert Hill, and their mother. He was in Newport as early as May 1650, but in Portsmouth shortly after that.

    Landowner, merchant, slaveholder, he was one of the early purchasers of land on Martha's Vineyard and very active in its settlement. He appears in Connecticut records on 20 May 1652, called "Dutchman"; he also spent time in Flushing and in New Amsterdam, where he was on occasion an interpreter between the English and the Dutch. He also owned land in Dartmouth, Massachusetts.

    "In 1663, he bought Indian lands in Holmes' Hole, Martha's Vineyard. Today it is known as Tisbury. This land he bought without the consent of all the Indians involved. Andrews Moriarty wrote that Henry Tallman of Schleswig-Holstein was the probable father of Peter Tallman of Hamburg, Barbados, and Rhode Island, he presented no direct evidence, listing only dates of christenings for Peter's two supposed sisters in the parish of St. Nicholas, but none for Peter himself."     Also called Peter Taelmann. Lived in Hamburg from 1584 on. Ancestral Lines (citation details below) says that "[w]hile there is no direct evidence that he became a citizen of Hamburg, it is said he was a sponsor for someone else's application. Some of the Taleman dealings in land were in the Jewish settlement in Hamburg in the Derwent along the Alster River; thus Peter may have been involved with the Sephardic sugar merchants."

    Notes:

    First appears in New England on 6 Sep 1638, when the Massachusetts General Court granted the petition of the Rev. Stephen Bachiler and others, including Richard Swaine, to establish a plantation at Winnacunnet, later renamed Hampton, New Hampshire.

    He held several tracts of land at Hampton and served in several of the usual civil positions. He had occasional difficulties with his neighbors. Most colorfully, on 5 Oct 1652 Henry Green brought a defamation suit against Richard Swaine for reporting that Green had "attempted the chastity of Bassill Swaine and used beastly and unseemly carriages and temptations toward" Grace Boulter, Richard Swaine's daughter. The suit was withdrawn.

    On 2 Jul 1659, Richard Swaine, along with Tristram Coffin, Sr., Thomas Macy, Thomas Barnard, Peter Coffin, Christopher Hussey, Stephen Greenleaf, John Swaine, and William Pile, purchased from Thomas Mayhew his rights to the island of Nantucket.

    On 12 Nov 1659 Richard Swaine was fined £3 and disenfranchised for entertaining Quakers.

    With his second wife Jane and his sons John and Richard, he appears to have moved to Nantucket by 16 Oct 1661.
