From "Three French Daughters and Their Husbands", citation details below:

Henry Kingsbury of Ipswich is difficult to separate from his father of the same name. The elder Henry was born in the early 1580s and married twice. His first wife, whom he married in Stoke by Nayland, Suffolk, in 1613, was Jane Warren, perhaps a relative of Thomas French Sr.'s mother, Susan Warren. While there is no known baptism for Henry and Jane's son Henry, he is mentioned as a godson in the 1616 will of John Coe of Little Cornard, Suffolk, and as a grandson in James Kingsbury's 1622 will. In a 1669 deposition, Henry the younger was described as 54 years old, yielding a calculated birth year of about 1615.

Henry the elder married second in 1621 the widow Margaret (Blyth) Alabaster. Their two children, James and Sarah, were baptized in Assington and accompanied their parents to Boston on the Talbot in 1630. Henry the younger arrived in New England sometime later, or at least separately.

Both Henrys worked in the service of the Winthrops in old England and new. In 1629 "goodman Kingsbury" was assaulted in the street and injured so badly he could not travel to London to take his oath to join the Winthrop Fleet. He was willing to send his brother. In late 1630 John Winthrop Jr. in England told his father how to proceed in a legal matter regarding a fine and said, "Mr. Gurdon desireth that Mr. Ludlow and goodman Kingsbury of Asington be 2 of the witnesses to it." He was "goodman Kingsburye of Asington" according to John Winthrop Jr.'s account list of 1630/1.

Henry Kingsbury called unexpectedly on Ephraim Child in 1634, seeking to reclaim a pair of bullocks for Gov. Winthrop. Ephraim would be ruined if the bullocks were removed before planting time, so it was good that they could not be found that day. In February 1634/5, Henry Jacie, residing with the Lord Mayor of York, found "H. Kingsburies letter" presumably from Boston, requesting three books on religion, for which he would pay. On a list of Winthrop family tailoring expenses, was 4s 6d for a suit for "Henry Kinsbury."

In January 1635/6, pregnant Mary (Winthrop) Dudley wished her dear and loving mother Margaret Winthrop to send several things "by Henry Kinsbury or any other Convenient messenger." In July 1636 Adam Winthrop conversed with Henry "Kinkgesbery" regarding the purchase of goats. This July 1636 contact was the last certain connection to the elder Henry Kingsbury.

As noted above, Henry Kingsbury of Ipswich was born about 1615 to Henry Kingsbury and his first wife Jane Warren. He died in Haverhill, Massachusetts, on 1 October 1687 aged 77 [sic]. In 1656 Henry Kingsbury had half a spinner in his household and was taxed 45 pence. By 1660 and probably earlier, he had a wife Susan who made her mark to several Ipswich deeds. Freedom French, wife of John French (younger son of Thomas), witnessed one of them in 1662.

Before 20 June 1638, Henry "Kinsbery" had land adjoining John Wyatt.[Wyatt was the second husband of the widow of Edward Riddlesdale, a brother of Susan (Riddlesdale) French.

Susan was probably Henry's only wife. Their only known daughter was named Susannah. This child was potentially their first, as she married in 1661/2, making her birth likely in about 1641/2.

Susan's husband, Henry, had two uncles who came to New England and settled in Dedham. The 1659 will of uncle John Kingsbury makes bequests to many relatives, including to "kinsman" Henry Kingsbery of Ipswich. Henry Kingsbury appraised John Gage's 1673 estate and Jonathan Gage's 1674 estate. Henry and John farmed near each other.

As seen above, Susan's son called Amy's husband "uncle Gage." The best answer to explaining their relationship is that Susan and Amy were both daughters of Thomas and Susan (Riddlesdale) French.

Henry married Susan French. Susan (daughter of Thomas French and Susan Riddlesdale) was born before 22 Apr 1616; was christened on 22 Apr 1616 in Assington, Suffolk, England; died on 21 Feb 1679 in Haverhill, Essex, Massachusetts. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

He and his wife emigrated and settled in Ipswich sometime not long before 25 Jul 1638, when a planting lot of Thomas French the elder is mentioned as a bound to land at the Reedy marsh. Four of their children preceded them to New England. Thomas and Alice almost certainly came with the Winthrop fleet in 1630, and Dorcas and Susan came together in 1633 or 1634, sent by Gov. John Winthrop's brother-in-law Thomas Gostlin to be servants in the Winthrop family. Dorcas became a maidservant in the elder Winthrop's household until she married Christopher Peake in 1637, and Susan served the younger John Winthrop's family for several years.
