Adam Winthrop

2. John Winthrop, Governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony was born on 12 Jan 1588 in Edwardstone, Suffolk, England; died on 26 Mar 1649 in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts.
3. Jane Winthrop was born on 14 Jun 1592; was christened on 17 Jun 1592; died on 16 May 1656.
4. Lucy Winthrop was born on 9 Jan 1600 in Groton, Suffolk, England; died on 19 Apr 1679 in Westminster, Middlesex, England.

Sheriff of London. "[A] substantial clothier, who founded the fortunes of the family, was granted the freedom of the city of London in 1526, and was inscribed 'armiger' in 1548. He obtained by a grant of 1544 the manor of Groton, Suffolk, formerly belonging to the monastery of Bury St. Edmunds." [1885 Dictionary of National Biography]

He was a clothier. He is consistently styled as "of Groton", Groton being his manor in Lavenham, in the various visitation pedigrees.
