From Descendants of David Akin of Newport, RI by Robert Larry Akin:

"On January 15, 1742, David requested permission to move to the Oblong (Quaker Hill, Dutchess, NY) from the New Bedford Monthly Meeting of the Quakers (New Bedford, MA). He moved to a very beautiful spot on a hill in the Oblong that today is the site of the Quaker Hill Golf Course. He was about 52 at the time and he brought his grown sons with him.

"The Birdsall Genealogy states that David built a sawmill on Quaker Hill and that this mill brought the Akin family 'great wealth'. [Daphne cited The Birdsall Family by G. B. Birdsall in her notes - John Akin notebook.]

"David was fairly wealthy and he and several other men deeded the land on April 16, 1764 for the Oblong Meeting House. This is from Settlers of the Beekman Patent, p. 63. He died on April 7, 1779 on Quaker Hill."

Robert Larry Akin also notes that his burial place is "north of the original site of Akin Hall."

Generation: 4

  1. 9.  Mary

    Notes:

From Descendants of David Akin of Newport, RI, by Robert Larry Akin:

"There is very little known about Mary, the 'mother' of this line of the Akin family in America. In fact, the only proof of her existence is a deed that is recorded in the Rhode Island State Archives dated 1671. A copy of this deed can be seen in the Town Hall in Portsmouth, Newport, RI. This deed is for 200 acres of land 'lying in Narragansett Country or Kings Province' purchased for ten pounds sterling. The grantors were William Brenton, Benedict Arnold, John Hull, John Porter, Samuel Wilbur, Asmuill Wilson, and Thomas Mumford. The description of the land states that it is bordered by land owned by Samuell Albro and Robert Hasard (Hazard).

"After purchasing the land in September 1671, Mary assigned it to two of her sons, John and David, the following January, 1672.

"Family lore says that Mary and her three children, John, James, and David, came to America on a ship that sailed from Aberdeen, Scotland to Newport County, Rhode Island before 1676, but there is not a shred of evidence to support this story. In fact, Mary could have been born in America and borne her children in this country. A genealogist I hired in Scotland, Diane Baptie, wrote: 'The reference in Donald Whyte's book A dictionary of emigrants to the USA reads: "Mrs. Mary Akin, From Aberdeen to Newport, Rhode Island before 1676; issue: John born 1663; David born 1664; James born 1668." His source is given as "Letters to the editor regarding Scottish emigrants - Scottish Genealogical Library, 4th January 1963". In other words, this entry does not rely on an original source but has been apparently sent by a correspondent to Donald Whyte almost certainly from America. Aberdeen could mean either the burgh or county of Aberdeen.' As a result, I believe that the idea that Mary traveled to America with her three sons is questionable since the source was a letter from America.

"The Akin genealogist Daphne Brownell found a deed showing that a man named David Akin lived in Newport, Newport, RI as early as 1662. A transcription of this deed can be found in Rhode Island Land Evidences, Vol. 1, 1648-1696 on pp. 84-85. Daphne and I believe that this man MAY have been the husband of Mary and, therefore, the 'father' of this Akin line in America; however, this is only speculation based on the idea of sparcity of population in Newport between 1662 and 1671 and the odds that two of them would be unrelated and named Akin.

"It is not know when either Mary Akin or David Akin were born nor when they died; however, since Mary signed the land deed mentioned above as Mary Akin, widow, we know that her husband died before 1671. No other dates are known.

"We do know the names of her children. They were John Akin, the eldest (b. 1663); James (b. 1667); and David, the youngest (b. 1669). These dates of birth are all derived from their ages at death so are not precise."

    Children:
    1. 4. Capt. John Akin was born in 1663; died on 13 Jun 1746 in Dartmouth, Bristol, Massachusetts.

  2. 10.  Ens. Thomas Briggs (son of John Briggs and Sarah Cornell); died on 12 Jun 1720 in of Dartmouth, Bristol, Massachusetts.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Alternate death: 12 Jan 1720

    Notes:

"[A]dmitted as a freeman of Portsmouth in 1673. He was a member of Peleg Sanford's troop of horse in 1667 and doubtless engaged in Indian fighting. [...] Thomas Briggs died in 1720, leaving an estate inventoried at slightly in excess of a thousand pounds. In 1694 he was listed as one of the fifty-six Proprietors of Dartmouth." [The Howland Heirs, citation details below.]

  4. 12.  Ralph Allen

    Notes:

In Sandwich, 1648; Dartmouth, 1675. A mason, he is usually referred to as "Ralph Allen the mason" in the ongoing project of sorting out the similarly-named early Allens. Possibly a son of George Allen who died at Sandwich in 1648, but more likely, George's son was the other, older Ralph Allen who lived at Sandwich during much the same time as this Ralph. This Ralph is frequently called "Jr." in Sandwich records in order to distinguish him from the older one.

    Ralph Allen = Esther Swift (b. 1629)

    * Buried in Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn.

Ralph married Esther Swift before 1646. Esther (daughter of William Swift and Joan) was born before 28 May 1629; was christened on 28 May 1629 in St. Mary Magdalen, Bermondsey, Surrey, England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Generation: 5

  1. 20.  John Briggs died in Nov 1690 in Portsmouth, Newport, Rhode Island.

    Notes:

John Briggs m. Sarah Cornell. Sarah Cornell's brother Thomas Cornell m. Rebecca, possibly Rebecca Briggs, who burned to death in 1673, for which her and Thomas's son, Thomas Jr., was prosecuted for murder in a trial that famously relied on dream-based "spectral evidence," some of which was offered by John Briggs. In his testimony, Briggs called himself "sixty-four years or thereabouts" (thus the commonly accepted birth year of 1609), and said that he had had a dream in which a woman was at his bedside, "whereas he was much affrighted and cryed out, in the name of God, what are thou? The apparition answered, I am your sister Cornell, and twice said, see how I was burnt with fire." Partly because of this testimony, Thomas Cornell was found guilty of the murder of his mother and was hanged.

Sources disagree on whether John Briggs and Rebecca Cornell were actually full siblings, half siblings, siblings-in-law, or some other relationship. It seems to be more generally agreed that John Briggs's wife Sarah Cornell was in fact a sister of the senior Thomas Cornell. See George E. McCracken, "Who Was Rebecca Cornell?", The American Genealogist 36:16 (January 1960), for an overview of the probably insoluble problem of Rebecca (maybe Briggs) Cornell's parentage, and for a critique of the idea (promulgated by the 1953 The Briggs Genealogy, citation details below) that John Briggs and Rebecca (maybe Briggs) Cornell were children of a family from the parish of St. James, Clerkenwell, London. Also see Killed Strangely: The Death of Rebecca Cornell by Elaine Forman Crane (Ithaca, New York: Cornell University Press, 2002).

John Briggs was one of the signers, in 1638, of the compact of the settlement of Aquidneck. He played a prominent part in the government of the town, serving as juryman, constable, town councilor, surveyor of lands, special commissioner, and Deputy to the General Assembly.

A receipt for this legacy in 1682 was signed by Mary Briggs and her husband Thomas." [The Howland Heirs, citation details below.]
