- He may have been the Nicholas Cottrell baptized 15 Aug 1591 at St. Helen's, Worcester, son of John Cottrell, of a family of Albigensians who emigrated to England.
He was twice married. His first wife's name is unknown; after his death, his second wife, Martha, married Walter Morey (also called Merry) of Taunton. It is not known which of his wives were the mother of any of his children.
"Nicholas Cottrell is first mentioned in the list of the inhabitants of Newport, Rhode Island on 20 May 1638. He was admitted a freeman in 1655. He represented the Town of Westerly in the Colonial Assembly in 1670. He was one of the signers of the Misquamicut (Westerly) Purchase Contract. He afterwards bought a tract of 700 acres of Plymouth Colony, in that part of Taunton now called Freetown, Massachusetts. Here he died in 1680. He left a will probated in Taunton, in which he mentions eight children. His son, Jabez, was executor." [Bierce and Cottrell, citation details below.]
