Notes - Her Find a Grave page gives her place of birth as Allegheny West, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. We believe this is confused. Both Philadelphia and Pittsburgh contain areas dating back to the 19th century called "Allegheny West." And a record of North Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh records the baptism of "Betsy Lee Yagle", parents "Charles and L. E. Yagle", on 13 Sep 1879.
Furthermore, census records show that her father Charles was born in Ohio and her mother Eliza in Kentucky. Along with Detroit and Cleveland, Pittsburgh was a common catchment point for Ohio River Valley people looking for work in the city; Philadelphia was distinctly less so.
Furthermore, the 1878 city directory of Pittsburgh shows her father living there, a clerk, at 136 Jackson.
Furthermore, the 1880 census shows her age 1, living with her parents in Allegheny, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. The municipality of Allegheny was annexed into Pittsburgh in 1907.
Finally, her grandson Patrick Foley writes, in correspondence, "I believe Bessie Yagle was born in Allegheny, Pennsylvania, which later became Pittsburgh. Her parents lived there as early as 1860 and as late as 1880."
In April 1894 her older sister Lida Alice married Antonio Lawrence Armetta, a Roman Catholic fruit dealer of Italian descent who was born in Louisiana. In December of that same year Bessie Yagle, aged 16, married Antonio's brother Joseph. Lida's marriage to Antonio lasted and produced six children, and according to Patrick Foley, "[t]he Armettas were an important part of the extended family in which Bessie's children grew up. Their home in San Jose was the scene of large gatherings of the extended family." Bessie's marriage to Joseph, however, must have ended before 17 Oct 1900, the date on which she and John Joseph Foley obtained a license to marry in San Jose.
