Notes - She appears in the 1850 census living in Benton, Ohio with her husband John Chilcote. This is the last census in which they appear together. In 1860 she is living in Benton with her daughter Rebecca and her son-in-law Frederick Wolfe. In 1870 she is living in Benton in the household of George Sanford, next door to her grandson John C. Wolfe; her entry includes the notation "infirm, lives with daughter," the daughter presumably being George Sanford's wife, whose name is hard to make out but probably reads Maria or Muriel, age 32. Hester Chilcote then appears in the 1880 census, still in Benton but now living in the household of George Lowrey, to whom she is identified as "mother-in-law." The 1870 census says nothing about her marital status, but the 1880 census clearly marks her as divorced. If she did in fact divorce John Chilcote, that would seem to have happened between 1850 and 1860.
Further on this, a "John Chilcoat", age 64, born in Maryland, appears in the 1860 census of Saline, Illinois, living in the household of I. R. Elder, age 40, and Elizabeth, age 39, both born in Ohio. Isaac Rains Elder married Elizabeth Chilcote, daughter of John and Hester Chilcote, in Hocking County, Ohio on 4 Oct 1835. Even though the age given for this "John Chilcoat" in the 1860 census is 64, inconsistent with other records that suggest he was born closer to the late 1780s, this seems like a very good fit; it seems clear that Hester and John Chilcote ceased to live together between the 1850 and 1860 censuses and went on to instead live separate lives with one or more of their offspring.
