Notes - An illiterate cooper, he was almost certainly not, as widely claimed, a son of Thomas Keene and Elizabeth Gosnold of Thrandeston, Suffolk, the latter a daughter of Robert Gosnold whose 1615 will bequeaths to "my daughter, the wife of Thomas Keene" and also to "Thomas Keene my grandchild". The gentry Gosnold family was not in the business of marrying its valuable daughters to coopers.
He may have been the Thomas Keyne (many spelling variants) who was an early settler of Kent Island and was involved in the fifteen-year conflict between Virginia and Maryland over the island's ownership.
