  On 13 Mar 1862, in Moore County, he enlisted in Company D of the 48th North Carolina Infantry, Confederate. On 10 Dec 1862 he is listed as having deserted. His death certificate calls him "married" rather than single, widowed, or divorced, so presumably he remarried after the death of Margaret Richardson in 1885.
