  • Notes
    • He was killed in the February 1838 sacking of Port Natal by the Zulu king Dingane.

Writing about Hannibal Dunn's grandson John Robert Dunn (1834-1895), a son of Robert Newton Dunn (1795-1847), Michael Green (citation details below) says that he "was born in 1833, either at Algoa Bay or Port Natal. His family settled at Port Natal and at the age of five he witnessed Dingane's sacking of the settlement (in which his grandfather was killed) from the brig Comet." As Colin and Barbara Pilcher point out on ancestry.com, John Robert Dunn's other grandfather, Alexander Biggar, died separately in a Zulu ambush in December 1838, so this can only refer to Hannibal Dunn.
