      "At an early age John de Radynden entered the service of Hugh le Despenser, under whom, as of the honor of Leicester, he held some at least of his mother's lands. The employment was a fortunate one for a young man of energy and ambition. Hugh le Despenser was the son of that elder Hugh, justiciary of England, who fought beside Simon de Montfort at Lewes and was killed at Evesham. He had already embarked on a public career, and was destined to rise to a position of the highest power in the land.
