    • "He was one of the forty-six original proprietors of the first purchase from the Indian Sachem, Massasoit, which included a tract of eight miles of what is now Taunton, Berkley and Raynham. He was one of the founders of Taunton in 1639, and constable there in 1645; member of the Board of the Supervising Council in 1657; chairman of the Board of Selectmen from 1666 to 1669; one of the founders of the Pilgrim Congregational Church at Taunton and also one of the stock proprietors of the first iron "bloomery" established in this region upon the site of the present "old forge" now in Raynham (1883). He was the first clerk in Taunton 1656, and one of the largest land owners of that place." [Josephine C. Frost, citation details below]
