Notes - He studied medicine under the direction of Dr. John Bulkeley of Colchester. He was evidently also a talented and largely self-taught musician, and over time constructed musicial instruments for his family, including a parlor organ and a dulcimer. The Puritan authorities of Hartford rebuked him more than once for these indulgences, which was probably one of the reasons he and his family eventually removed to Great Barrington and joined the Episcopal church there.
