From the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (citation details below):

A household knight of Edward II, Ingham was the recipient of many royal grants, including the custody of the castle of Ellesmere, Shropshire, in June 1321. During the disturbances of the early 1320s, he served Edward II against the baronial rebels led by Thomas, earl of Lancaster (d. 1322), subsequently receiving grants of offices in Wiltshire and Shropshire and becoming keeper of Chester and Flint. As a knight-banneret, he served in Scotland with the king in August 1322. In 1324 he was appointed adviser to the king's half-brother Edmund, earl of Kent (d. 1330), who represented Edward as lieutenant in Aquitaine. Anglo-French tensions had led to the outbreak of war with France, and Ingham, dispatched to Aquitaine with a force of Spanish and other mercenary troops, conducted a successful campaign against the French in the Agenais.

As a trusted lieutenant of both the king and the Despensers, Ingham was appointed seneschal of Aquitaine on 7 October 1325, and in April 1326 extensive powers were granted him over the financial administration of the duchy. He appears to have gained the confidence of many members of the Gascon nobility, but the terms of an agreement made with the French in 1327 led to his temporary banishment from Aquitaine. Although he had been an associate of the Despensers, Ingham largely escaped the recriminations unleashed in England against the latter and their clients following the crises of 1326–7. Having become an adherent of Roger Mortimer, earl of March, he was summoned to parliament between June 1328 and September 1330, and was a partisan judge in the trial of the conspirators who attempted to overthrow Mortimer in February 1329. In October 1330, when Mortimer was toppled from power, Ingham was seized by the young Edward III at Nottingham and sent for trial to London. On 22 October his lands and goods were declared forfeit.

Nevertheless, Ingham was pardoned on 8 December 1330 because the young king acknowledged his loyal service to Edward II. His property was restored to him, with the important exception of grants from the crown. From this time onwards he was to serve the king in Aquitaine, and rarely returned to England until his death. On 29 June 1331 he was reappointed as seneschal in Aquitaine, an office he was to hold for twelve years—an unusually long tour of duty. Ingham was responsible for the peace, order, and defence of the duchy during a period of crisis in Anglo-French relations which led to the outbreak of the Hundred Years' War in 1337. By August 1336 the duchy was on a war footing and Ingham was ordered to forbid all Gascon men-at-arms to leave the land without licence, and to ensure that all major strongholds were properly garrisoned, equipped, and victualled.

Philippe VI of France confiscated Aquitaine on 24 May 1337. It fell to Ingham, as seneschal, to receive the French commissioners appointed to take possession of the duchy. He met them at Libourne, but refused to surrender his charge. Like their predecessors in 1294, the French envoys departed, proclaiming the duchy's confiscation. Ingham's services in Aquitaine were acknowledged on 15 July 1337, when his and his ancestors' debts were written off. Relieved of this burden, Ingham began military operations in Aquitaine, generally confined to the Agenais, but, despite the loss of Penne and Bourg, he successfully defended Bonnegarde, Montlaur, and other strongholds. He fought off a French attack on Bordeaux in 1339 and, financial stringency notwithstanding, retained substantial companies of Gascon nobles in his service.

In January 1342 Ingham was summoned to a council in England in order to report upon the state of affairs in Aquitaine, and on 6 April 1343 he was relieved of his post as seneschal. He died, probably at Ingham, on 29 January 1344. […]

His tomb survives, a masterly and unusual monument, in which Ingham lies upon a bed of stones, in a twisted posture, one hand grasping his sword as if to do battle with the Devil for possession of his soul. The significance of the bed of stones is unclear, but it may refer either to a cult of penitence or to Ingham's essentially martial qualities. A huge, publicly displayed, recumbent figure of a river-god on a bed of stones at Rome was popularly regarded as a statue of Mars during the middle ages, and the allusion to the god of war may have been reinforced by wall-paintings (now lost) above and behind Ingham's effigy which depicted hunting scenes and, perhaps, astrological references to the month of March (Mars). Whatever the case, Ingham's tomb is one of the finer examples of the monumental sculpture of the period.

Richardson (citation details below) says that Thomas Tyndall married his second wife Amy Fermor "about 1533", implying that Anne Paston must have died before then, but to our mind a better bound for both events is the one pointed out by Robin Wood on the Wikitree page for Anne Paston: Thomas Tyndall's second marriage "certainly took place before May 1544, when Sir Thomas sold the manor of Helpston, the last remnant of the Tyndall estates in Northamptonshire, for the dower of his wife Amy was reserved from the sale."

    Notes:

Sheriff of Norfolk and Suffolk in 1565-66.

“He played little part in national affairs but took a prominent role in the government and political life of his native county and was known as a careful administrator and a ‘just and painstaking magistrate’ [...] A supporter of Edmund Freake, bishop of Norwich (1575–84), Paston was involved in the bitter conflict between the bishop and the puritans for control of the chancellorship of the diocese in 1578. He was described by Bishop Scrambler as an ‘observer of law’ which has been taken to mean that his religious views were either conformist Church of England or impartial (Smith, 214). In 1597 he moved to the new house which his uncle, Sir Clement Paston, had built at Oxnead. Known for his liberality, hospitality and benefactions, Paston is chiefly remembered for the founding and endowment of North Walsham grammar school (the Paston School), in 1606.” [Oxford DNB, citation details below.]

  1. 63.  Elizabeth Bullock Descendancy chart to this point (56.William12, 48.Richard11, 40.Thomas10, 31.Margaret9, 22.Joan8, 14.Elizabeth7, 9.John6, 6.Margaret5, 4.Joan4, 3.Joan3, 2.Oliver2, 1.Margery1) was born before 7 Jul 1603; was christened on 7 Jul 1603 in Barkham, Berkshire, England.

    Notes:

A probable "gateway ancestor" of TWK. The issue is whether the Elizabeth who married Augustine Clement was a sister of the immigrant Edward Bullock. Genealogist Leslie Mahler has been arguing the case for this in a variety of places, for instance noting on SGM that "There are a number of records connecting Augustine Clement & Edward Bullock to each other. They originated in neighboring parishes, one calls the other 'brother' etc."

Robert Charles Anderson's sketch of Edward Bullock in volume 1 of The Great Migration: Immigrants to New England, 1634-1635, p. 476, notes that the list of debts attached to the end of Edward Bullock's will mentions "brother Clemens," of which Anderson remarks, "probably referring to Augustine Clement as a brother in the church." To that, Mahler points out that Edward Bullock was not a member of the church. And in volume 2 of the same Great Migration series, in the sketch of Augustine Clement (p. 101), Anderson seems much closer to being convinced that Clement's wife Elizabeth was a sister of Edward Bullock:
On 26 July 1649, "Elisabeth Clements testified on oath that Edw[ard] Bullock of Dorchester is the son of Mr. W[illia]m Bullock late of Barkham in Berkeshirre" [Aspinwall 227]. In his will of 25 July 1649, "Edward Bullock of Dorchester" appointed Augustine Clement as one of his overseers, and among the debts owed by his estate was one to "brother Clements" [SPR 1:288-89; GM 2:1:476-77].

"Elisabeth Clements" of the 1649 deposition was almost certainly the wife of Augustine Clement. In the normal course of events, we might suggest that the reference to "brother Clements" indicated a church relationship, but we have no evidence that Bullock was a member of Dorchester church. Wokingham and Barkham are adjacent parishes in Berkshire. All of this suggests that Augustine Clement had married a sister of Edward Bullock.

The registers of Barkham, Berkshire, show that the two youngest children of William Bullock, gentleman, were Edward, baptized 6 August 1595, and Elizabeth, baptized 7 July 1603 [Leslie Mahler, private communication]. Although there is a discrepancy between this baptismal date and the age given in 1635 on embarkation by EDWARD BULLOCK {1635, Dorchester} [GM 2:1:476-77], this would appear to be the immigrant, and the sister Elizabeth baptized in 1603 would be of an appropriate age for the wife of Augustine Clement.
Neither Edward Bullock nor the wife of Augustine Clement are included among the gateway ancestors in Richardson's 2013 Royal Ancestry, but a line from Edward I to Winston Churchill and to the Bush presidents, a line which presumes that the wife of Augustine Clement was a daughter of William Bullock, is included in Gary Boyd Roberts's 2018 The Royal Descents of 900 Immigrants (citation details below). In the notes to the line, Roberts says that it was "brought to my attention by Leslie Mahler of San Jose, California, and the name of William Bullock's wife was added by Douglas Richardson of Salt Lake City. Clinching proof (or disproof) that Mrs. Elizabeth Clement(s) was a sister of Edward Bullock of Dorchester, Mass., would be welcome."

One of JTS's eleven proven "gateway ancestors."

She went to New England with he husband in 1635, but by 1643 it was evident that colonial life was taking a serious toll on her health. On 10 May 1643 Richard Saltonstall was granted permission to leave the Massachusetts General Court due to her illness. They returned to England late in 1645; he then went immediately back to New England.

"There is no evidence that Muriel Saltonstall was ever in New England again. Henry Newcome saw the Saltonstalls at Hulme in Lancashire on 19 June 1667, and reported that she was very weak. She died in 1688. Newcome preached her funeral sermon at Didsbury. Muriel Saltonstall's dislike of New England apparently extended to a desire that her portrait should not be sent to Massachusetts after her death." [Abandoning America, citation details below.]

    Notes:

    From www.ywcasf-marin.org/marin-womens-hall-fame/honorees/elizabeth-thacher-kent:

Elizabeth Thacher Kent, a matriarch in the founding family of Kentfield, is one of the few Marin County women to be elected posthumously to the Marin Women's Hall of Fame. Kent was a distinguished proponent of women's rights and international peace and was instrumental in securing women's right to vote.

Kent took up permanent residence in Marin in 1907 and immediately became a vocal activist in support of women's' suffrage. When her husband, William, was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, Kent leveraged her position as a Congressman's wife to support the national suffrage movement. She was a featured speaker at the 1913 and 1914 conventions of the National American Women's Suffrage Association (NAWSA) and shortly thereafter assumed leadership of their Congressional Committee. By 1915, she helped form the Congressional Union (later re-named the Women's Party), which picketed the White House in support of suffrage. Kent was arrested twice for her suffrage demonstrating. However, her cause prevailed and in August 1920 the Susan B. Anthony Amendment to the United States Constitution was passed guaranteeing American women the right to vote.

In addition to supporting suffrage, Elizabeth Kent was committed to the cause of world peace. In the 1930's, she provided leadership to the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. She and her husband were also early supporters of the fledging conservation movement. They donated a large tract of land to the U.S. Government to preserve old-growth redwoods. Their gift, the Muir Woods National Monument, provides a lasting testimony to the Kents' exemplary lives of public service.

Elizabeth 'Bibbs' [sic] Arnold of Los Altos, a mathematician, environmentalist and wildlife advocate who helped crack the Japanese code during World War II, died Friday, Sept. 18, 1992, at her Los Altos Hills home of lung cancer. She was 76.

A native of San Francisco, Dr. Arnold was reared in Marin County and was the oldest grandchild of Rep. William Kent, for whom the city of Kentfield was named.

The daughter of a prominent San Francisco attorney, Eugene Arnold, she attended the Katherine Branson School in Ross and graduated first in her class in 1932. The school later named a day in her honor after she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa at Vassar College in her junior year.

After graduating from Vassar in 1937, Dr. Arnold earned her Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of California at Berkeley in 1941.

During World War II, Dr. Arnold was recruited by the Navy and worked on a team of cryptographers cracking Japanese codes, for which she received a Meritorious Civilian Service Award.

In the 1960s, Dr. Arnold worked on machine language translation at Lockheed Missiles and Space Co. Inc.

After her retirement in 1969, Dr. Arnold helped establish a recycling center in Los Altos and worked with Wildlife Rescue, helping injured animals.

Dr. Arnold is survived by her husband of 46 years, Dr. William Francis Whitmore of Los Altos; four sons, Charles Whitmore of Washington, D.C., Edward Whitmore of San Francisco, Thomas Whitmore of Oakland and Peter Whitmore of Victoria, B.C. Also surviving are her brothers, George Stanleigh Arnold of Kentfield, Peter Arnold of Grass Valley and Anthony Arnold of Novato.

    -----

Note that the above obituary is in error in two respects. Her father was George Stanleigh Arnold, not Eugene Arnold; and her family nickname was "Bibba", not "Bibbs."

Her page at the Mathematics Genealogy Project is here, showing her to be a generation of advisors closer to Felix Klein than her husband was.

Miss Wright was also a former editor of Harpers Bazaar. A collection of her magazine articles, ''Get Away From Me With Those Christmas Gifts,'' was published by McGraw-Hill in 1957. She was also the author of a novel, ''A Shark Infested Rice Pudding.''

After her graduation from Bryn Mawr College, Miss Wright edited and prepared for publication ''Islandia,'' a Utopian novel about an imaginary country written by her father, the late Austin Tappen [sic] Wright, who was a professor of law at the University of California at Berkeley and the University of Pennsylvania. The novel, which has been a steady seller, was published in 1942, reissued in 1958. It is currently published by Arno Press Inc. and the New American Library.

At her death, Miss Wright was writing a biography of her great-aunt, Melusina Fay Peirce, an early feminist and first wife of the American physicist, mathematician and philosopher Charles Sanders Peirce.

Miss Wright is survived by her husband, Paul J. Mitarachi; a son, John; a sister, Phyllis King of Manhattan; and two brothers, Benjamin and William Wright.

"John Sargent, Former Doubleday President, Dies at 87." The New York Times, 8 Feb 2012:

John T. Sargent, who as president and later chairman of Doubleday & Company oversaw its expansion from a modest-size family-controlled book publisher to an industry giant with interests extending into broadcasting and baseball, died on Sunday at his home in Manhattan. He was 87.

The death was confirmed by his son, John T. Sargent Jr., the chief executive of Macmillan, the publishing company.

Mr. Sargent, who was already working for Doubleday when he married Neltje Doubleday, granddaughter of the company's founder, Frank Nelson Doubleday, in 1953, was named president and chief executive in 1961. At the time, the company was largely a trade book publisher; it also ran a book club, a New York bookstore and a modest printing concern.

Over the next 17 years, in partnership with Nelson Doubleday Jr., grandson of the founder, Mr. Sargent worked to expand all of those enterprises, largely succeeding in spite of a divorce in 1965 and an insurrection by a minority of the company's shareholders, led by his former wife, who wanted it to go public.

By 1979, the year after he left the presidency and was made chairman, Doubleday was publishing 700 books annually. The company had bought a textbook subsidiary and the Dell Publishing Company, which included Dell paperbacks. It was operating more than a dozen book clubs, including the mammoth Literary Guild; more than two dozen Doubleday bookshops across the country; and four book printing and binding companies.

In addition, Mr. Sargent led the company's expansion into radio and television broadcasting and film production. As chairman, he was involved in the company's purchase of the New York Mets in 1980.

The Doubleday company eschewed publicity and the prying of journalists. "The Sphinx Called Doubleday" was the headline on a 1979 article about the company in The New York Times, which described its publishing ethos this way: "There is no class of book that is considered a 'Doubleday book,' nor is there any book that would automatically be judged unsuitable for the Doubleday imprint. Generally speaking, the house frowns on books loaded with sex, it would be unlikely to publish an anti-Kennedy book since Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis is an editor there, and it doesn't exhaust itself trying to lasso serious literature."

The company may have been known for its secretive ways, but Mr. Sargent was visible among the New York elite, both during business hours and after. A strapping man, dapper and sociable, he was a voracious reader, an erudite speaker and, at one time, a poetry editor who worked with Theodore Roethke, the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award winner, who became a friend and, according to family lore, spent more than one night sleeping in the Sargent bathtub after an evening of imbibing.

He dined with his famous authors — who included Daphne du Maurier, Peter Benchley, Alex Haley, Leon Uris and Stephen King — and other notable friends; attended A-list parties with socialites like Brooke Astor; frequented the opera; hobnobbed with movie stars. He was a friend and frequent escort of Mrs. Onassis, and hired her as an editor at Doubleday.

"The guy liked dressing up in a tux and going out," his son said. "The publishing world was his world, and the social aspect was part of it. It all folded together."

John Turner Sargent was born on June 26, 1924, and spent his early years in Cedarhurst, on Long Island. (No one in the family knows where, exactly, he was born, his son said, and his birth certificate has not yet been found.) His grandfather was the well-known botanist Charles Sprague Sargent; his father, Charles Jr., worked in finance. He went to St. Mark's School in Massachusetts and spent a year at Harvard before joining the Navy. Prevented from fighting overseas because of a punctured eardrum, he spent the war years "loading bombers in Florida," his son said.

After his discharge he worked briefly for Time magazine and then began at Doubleday, writing book jacket copy, in the late 1940s. Over the next several years he read manuscripts, sold syndication and subsidiary rights, worked as an advertising manager and editor and was business manager of several publishing divisions. As president of the company, he succeeded Douglas Black, who had succeeded Nelson Doubleday Sr.

Mr. Sargent met Ms. Doubleday, a painter who now lives in Wyoming, when he was 28 and she was 18. After their divorce she waged a long battle, enlisting some other shareholders, to get the company to sell shares to the public, but her mother, her brother and her former husband all lined up against her and the effort failed. The company was finally sold to the German conglomerate Bertelsmann in 1986.

A longtime colleague of Mr. Sargent, Samuel S. Vaughan, who served the company as editor in chief and publisher, died on Jan. 30.

In addition to John Jr., Mr. Sargent's survivors include a daughter, Ellen; six grandchildren; his wife, the former Betty Nichols Kelly, whom he married in 1985; and two stepchildren, Elizabeth Lee Kelly and James Hamilton Kelly.

    -----

John Turner Sargent Sr. and Neltje Doubleday are 8th cousins, both being 7XG-grandchildren of the Rev. John Ward (1606-1693) and his wife Alice (1612-1680).

John married Neltje Doubleday on 16 May 1953 in Oyster Bay, Long Island, New York, and was divorced in Sep 1965. Neltje (daughter of Nelson Doubleday and Ellen George McCarter) was born in 1934. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    CEO of Macmillan Publishers.

His philanthropic activities include longtime service on the board of directors of Graham Windham, more recently called simply Graham, a nonprofit foster care agency providing services to needy children and families in the New York metropolitan area. Founded in 1806, Graham, the oldest non-sectarian childcare agency in the United States, was originally the Orphan Asylum Society of the City of New York, co-founded by Eliza Hamilton after her husband Alexander Hamilton, himself an orphan, was killed in the famous duel with Aaron Burr — a grandson of John Sargent's 6X-grandfather the Rev. Jonathan Edwards. Thus Aaron Burr's first cousin six times removed has served for years on the board of Eliza Hamilton's orphanage.

He is also the author, under the anagrammatic pen name "S. T. Garne," of two children's books, One White Sail: A Caribbean Counting Book (1992) and By a Blazing Blue Sea (1999).
