  1. 22.  Rev. Edward Bulkeley Descendancy chart to this point (18.Jane9, 15.Mary8, 12.Thomas7, 9.Lawrence6, 7.Grace5, 5.Oliver4, 3.Constance3, 2.John2, 1.Thomas1) was born before 12 Jun 1614; was christened on 12 Jun 1614 in Odell, Bedfordshire, England; died on 2 Jan 1696 in Chelmsford, Middlesex, Massachusetts; was buried in Concord, Middlesex, Massachusetts.

    Notes:

Arriving in 1634, he was the first of the extensive Bulkeley family to come to New England.

Matriculated pensioner from St. Catharine's College, Cambridge, Easter 1629, he studied with the Rev. Cotton in New England while boarding at his house. He was ordained in Marshfield in 1643. After fifteen years as the minister there, he was installed as his father's successor at Concord in 1659, and remained there for 53 years.

He is said to have been disabled in some manner ("lame and of a feeble constitution"). Of his preaching style, Grindall Reynolds had this to say in 1896:
One production of Mr. Bulkeley has escaped the tooth of time, -- his sermon delivered after the return of Captain Thomas Wheeler from Brookfield fight. It was a time to stir a man's soul. The whole Colony was convulsed. Every frontier settlement and every lonely farmhouse was in peril. Two of his parishioners had been slain. Two more came home so shattered that they lingered only a few months. The lot of these might any hour be the lot of his hearers. You read the sermon through from text to conclusion. There is not one throb of pathos in it. You cannot find an eloquent line, hardly an impressive sentence. It is a maze of Inquisitions and Instructions, of Applications and Uses, of Doctrines and Reasons, of Motives and Improvements, wherein the mind wanders and is lost. How could a tender human heart help breaking through the meshes of formality? And how was it possible for men, of rude speech possibly, but of strong and hot sympathies, to admire or approve such stiff and measured utterance?

With so little to guide it is not possible to speak confidently. Still this is certain. The younger Bulkeley has not left behind the impression of power which his father did. Apparently he had not his vigorous personality, his culture, or his great heart. Mather calls him "the worthy son" of a worthy sire. Clearly he was that. An honest, faithful, and devout man. But with all his real excellence one who did not rise much above mediocrity.

From Wikipedia (accessed 1 Sep 2020):

Sir Thomas Allen, 1st Baronet […,] also spelt Aleyn or Alleyn, was an English politician and grocer.

He was the son of William Aleyn and his wife Elizabeth Compton, daughter of William Compton. Allen was alderman of Cheap Ward from 1652 until 1660 and subsequently of Aldgate Ward until 1679. He then represented Bridge Without until 1683 and again from 1689 until his death a year later. Allen was appointed Sheriff of London in 1654 and Lord Mayor of London in 1659. He is remembered as the Lord Mayor who welcomed King Charles II of England into the City of London on 29 May 1660 after his exile, regarded by many as the pivotal episode in the Restoration of the monarchy. Allen was knighted on the king’s visit and two weeks later, on 14 June, he was created a baronet, of London, in the County of Middlesex. In 1673, he was admitted to Gray’s Inn and in 1676, he became Master of the Worshipful Company of Grocers.

Around 1648, he married Elizabeth Birch, and had by her a son. Allen died in 1690 and was buried in Totteridge. He was succeeded in the baronetcy by his son Thomas (1648–1730), who married Elizabeth Angell but had no children. On his death the baronetcy became extinct.

Thomas married Elizabeth Birch before 1649. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  3. 24.  Dr. Thomas Gerard Descendancy chart to this point (20.John9, 16.Thomas8, 13.William7, 11.Thomas6, 8.Peter5, 6.Thomas4, 4.Peter3, 2.John2, 1.Thomas1) was born before 10 Dec 1608; was christened on 10 Dec 1608 in Winwick, Lancashire, England; died between 28 Jan 1673 and 19 Nov 1673 in Westmoreland County, Virginia; was buried in St. Clement's, St. Mary's County, Maryland.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Alternate death: Between 1 Feb 1672 and 19 Oct 1673

    Notes:

"He immigrated to Maryland in 1638, brought his family in 1650, [and] was lord of St. Clement's, Basford, and Westwood Manors, St. Mary's County, Maryland. He was a controversial figure in provincial politics and frequently at odds with the proprietor's spokesman. He served as a member of Provincial Assembly and Upper House, the Provincial Council, and a Justice of the Provincial Court. He supported Fendall's Rebellion in 1659/60, for which he was permanently barred from voting or holding office in the colony. He removed to Westmoreland County, Virginia in 1664, where he settled at Gerard's Reserve in Lower Machadoc." [Royal Ancestry, citation details below]

"Doctor Thomas Gerard, 'Esq.,' Lord of 'St. Clement's Manor,' St. Mary's County, Md. [...] ]was a Member of the Assembly of Maryland from St. Mary's Hundred, and also in 1641, of the Council. He seems to have been a fearless and determined man, and to have acted on his conviction irrespective of all parties. With the grant of a manor, there was frequently granted a right for the Lord of the Manor to hold a 'Court Leet and Court Baron.' There is a record of the holding of several of such Courts at 'St. Clement's Manor,' from 1659-72, which gives an interesting insight into the life and customs of that time. It was in the session of Assembly that met on February 28th, 1659-60, (which convened at Thomas Gerard's) that Governor Fendall, Thomas Gerard and Nathaniel Utie (Utye), the latter two were of the Council, and the majority of the house of Delegates, struck their blow for the overthrow of the Lord Proprietor's power and attempted to make the house of Delegates supreme. By this means a Commonwealth, similar to that which had existed in the Mother country, was to be established." [Ancestral Records and Portraits, citation details below]

From John Walton, "Genealogica Marylandia: Gerard's Daughters" (citation details below):

Dr. Thomas Gerard, member of an ancient and great Lancashire County Catholic family, was born in 11609, probably in Newhall. In 1629 he married Susanna Snow, daughter of John and Judith (some say Edryth) Snow of Staffordshire, and a sister of Abel, Justinian, and Marmaduke Snow who were associated with Lord Baltimore in the Maryland enterprise. Abel Snow held the manor of Snow Hill. Apparently, Dr. Thomas Gerard was a distant cousin of the Richard Gerard who came to Maryland in 1633 and returned to England in 1635. Richard was probably a descendant of Sir Thomas Gerard, the great Elizabethan. As far as is known Dr. Thomas Gerard came to Maryland, first, in 1638; after a return trip or two, brought his family over in 1650. On September 19 of that year he demanded 2000 acres of land for transporting himself, his wife, and five children into the province as well as Mr. Austin Hall (or Hull) and eight manservants and four woman servants. His children were Justinian, Susan, Frances, Temperance, and Elizabeth.

Of all Baltimore's manorial Lords, Dr. Thomas Gerard probably governed his demesne in the most traditionally baronial style. At St. Clement's he held manorial courtto--the Court Leet and the Court Baron--he took advantage of prover bial prerogatives of his position for the enjoyment of the good things of this world, and he continued to acquire land. To the 3500 acres that lay across the Potomac in Westmoreland County he retreated after his unexplained participation in Josias Fendall's rebellion in 1660. There he married his second wife, a young widow by the name of Rose Tucker (by whom he had no children), and there he died in 1673. His body was brought back to St. Clements to lie by that of his first wife, Susanna.

A footnote to the history of Virginia records that Dr. Thomas Gerard, together with Henry Corbin, John Lee, and Isaac Allerton*, erected a "Banquetting House"; many years later an unusually strait-laced Bishop of Virginia cited the events that occurred in this house as an example of "riotous living" in the seventeenth century.

[* Son of the Mayflower passenger Isaac Allerton by his second wife, Fear Brewster. --PNH]

From the Find a Grave page for Pvt John Damon:

John was a minor when his father died (about age 15) and as such his father's will puts him under the guardianship of Thomas Poole (1673-1732) for male guidance. Poole was indirectly related to the Damons since his sister Rebecca had married Peter Emerson. Poole was also trusted by the community since in 1721 the Reading community vote him to a committee of three that would oversee a loan fund from money provided to various towns by the Massachusetts General Court to stimulate growth. Individuals could borrow from 5 to 20 pounds. His brother-in-law Peter Emerson was also on this committee. John's 12 year old sister Abigail was placed under the guardianship of her mother Lucy Ann. [...]

He enlisted (or perhaps had already trained) as a private in the Captain Josiah Putnam's company in Col. Jedediah Foster's regiment which marched to Roxbury at Boston when the first alarm was raised. His son Peter was a corporal in this same company, which was led by his father-in-law (Peter had married Lydia Putnam, and his brother Jude married Ruth Putnam, both the nieces of General Israel Putnam).

A John Damon is named in the the fourth school district for Western in 1779 when it was divided into six districts. There are 14 other families in this district including Peter Demon (Damon) who is John's son and Isaac Gleason who must be a relative of John's wife Hannah Gleason. In district 4 there are also five Bliss families (Aaron, Edward, Isaac, Moses, and Solomon) and others as well( Reuben in #2, and Samuel in #3) who are likely relatives of John's daughter-in-law Esther Hubbard whose mother was Hannah Bliss. Other Gleasons in the town include John (district 1) and Joseph (district 5). So it would appear that these families stayed close to each other as a social network for mutual support.

Family/Spouse: Hannah. Hannah died in 1758. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
