    Edward Wightman, called in the will of his grandfather John Wightman, of Hancock, Mass., "eldest son of my son Titus Whitman," was probably an infant when his parents removed from Rhode Island to Beekman's Precinct, Dutchess Co., N.Y. During the Revolution he served in the 14th Regiment of Albany County, N.Y. militia, which suggests that he had already left Dutchess County on or before the outbreak of the War. The location of his father's family at this latter time is not known; but most of their relatives were located at Hancock, Mass. and in southern Vermont around Manchester. Following the War, Edward's younger brother George, married a cousin in Manchester, Vt., and located there. The first Federal census of 1790 does not list Edward anywhere as head of a family; but the census of 1800 for Pawlet, Rutland Co., Vt., shows him there as head of a household. It is regarded as established, but without documentary proof, that Edward was the father of the three children given below. The facts, supplied in large part by a descendant of William, the second of the children, are as follows:

    The three children named below were brothers. Their birth place was Pawlet, Vt. (family record). When William was "about four years old" their mother died, and shortly afterwards the father gave all three away to be brought up in three different families. It is said that the father went away, married again, and had another family.

    The census of 1800 indicates the household of Edward of Pawlet as comprising one female, 26 to 45; and three children older than three little boys therein given as under 10. As Edward nowhere appears as head of a household in 1790, it seems unlikely that these older children were Edward's. They may have been the children of a housekeeper, possibly a sister. Edward is not given in Pawlet or elsewhere in Vermont in the next or any subsequent census lists.

    The three boys all grew up in the locality about Pawlet and Manchester, and two, if not all three, married there. David named his eldest son Edward.

    William Wightman was an infant of about three years of age when his mother died and he was given to a childless couple by the name of Hamilton to be brought up. He kept his own family name and grew up as Bill Whitman. Later, when he was a grown man his older brother, David, returning to Vermont to see the brother left behind told him that his name was really Wightman, and he so called himself thereafter.

    He married probably in Manchester and seems to have engaged in farming as the records at Manchester show several transactions in land in Bennington County. He also bought a farm in Pawlet on 23 Feby. 1829, selling the same in 1833. He finally located in E. Dorset; but he sold his farm there 3 Feby. 1855 and some ten years later, in 1865, went to Marion, Linn Co., Ia. where some of his children had located. Both he and Martha died at the home of their son Franklin D. Wightman in Marion.

    Following his death, this son notified his sister Marian by letter of the father's passing, and she was moved to write a brief note of information concerning their father, pinning the note to the letter. As this compiler was seeking to establish the relationship of this branch of the family, Marian's daughter, Mrs. Carrie Rivett of Lincoln, Neb., now a woman of seventy-five years, went through old letters, the accumulation of half a century, and found that note in her mother's handwriting. Lacking that valuable evidence, it is probable that this family would have remained unplaced.

    William married Martha Woodard on 19 Jun 1822 in Sandgate, Bennington, Vermont.
