    Notes:

The 1917 history of Twinsburg, Ohio (citation details below) places another Steven (or Stephen) Turner as father of this one, and son of Amos Turner, but provides no further information. Given that Amos Turner and Prudence Allyn married in 1770, and this Steven Turner's wife Lucretia Wightman was definitely born in 1772, we find this extra generation implausible on simple chronological grounds.

Also notably, A Portrait and Biographical Record of Portage and Summit Counties, Ohio (citation details below) says "Stephen Turner's father was Amos Turner, who married Prudence Allyn, June 1, 1770."

Family/Spouse: Lucretia Wightman. Lucretia (daughter of Lieut. Isaac Wightman and Lucretia Packer) was born on 27 Aug 1772 in Groton, New London, Connecticut. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

    He was a Baptist minister.

A Portrait and Biographical Record of Portage and Summit Counties, Ohio (citation details below) states that "Both the Turners and Baileys were of old colonial Puritan ancestry from England". Which is certainly true of Charles Avery Turner and might someday provide a hint toward Mary Bailey's ancestry.

From A Portrait and Biographical Record of Portage and Summit Counties (citation details below):

Rev. Turner was a Baptist minister. He lived for some time at Groton, Conn., and at Blandford, Mass. Rev. Turner later bought land in Twinsburg township, and cleared his farm from the woods, and here he remained until his death. Services were held in the school-houses and at their homes throughout the surrounding townships of Twinsburg, Aurora, Streetsboro, Hudson; Northampton, Stowe, and Boston. The pioneer Baptists were poor, and Rev. Turner never had a salary for his work. He supported his large family by his labor on the farm and gave all his children an excellent education at the famous pioneer academy of Rev. Bissell, of Twinsburg. Rev. Turner was one of the faithful pioneer ministers who preached the gospel in the wilderness without money and without price. His children were Mary A., who married Rev. Williams, a Baptist minister; Joel, who died in California; Lucy; Charles, attorney-at-law, who served throughout the Civil war, entering as captain and coming out as brigadier-general, afterward judge of court of common pleas at Pekin, Ills., where he died. Then there were Emeline, Eunice, Jerusha, whe died young, Elisha, attorney-at-law, and Alcalde, of Jackson, Cal., who was shot in the court house while making a political speech. Then Reuben, who died aged sixteen years; Cordelia, and Daniel, who served in the Civil war. Rev. Turner reared a remarkable and excellent family, his sons becoming prominent men. He died at Twinsburg, October 5, 1874, aged seventy-eight years. He was early a democrat, a strong anti-slavery man, and became a republican on the outbreak of the war.

Rev. married Mary Bailey on 8 Mar 1818 in Groton, New London, Connecticut. Mary was born on 12 Nov 1798 in Connecticut; died on 24 Jul 1889; was buried in Locust Grove Cemetery, Twinsburg, Summit, Ohio. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

From his Find a Grave page (citation details below):

Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He served during the Civil War as Colonel and commander of the 108th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 26, 1865 for "faithful and meritorious services during the campaign against the city of Mobile and its defenses".

From a 2013 auction listing offering his personal presentation sword:

CHARLES TURNER (1825-1880) was born in Hampden Co., Mass. and prior to the outbreak of war practiced law and served as a judge. He enlisted in Pekin, IL on Aug. 28, 1862 as a lieutenant colonel, and likely obtained this sword at that time. Wear on the inside of the scabbard indicates much use, leading us to believe that he carried it for much if not the entire conflict. Six months later Turner was promoted to colonel. Turner served with distinction for the entire war, seeing action at Chickasaw Bluff, the capture of Fort Hindman, Port Gibson, Champion's Hill (where the regiment fought until its ammunition was exhausted), Vicksburg, the repulse of Forrest at Memphis, in operations against Mobile, and in the siege and capture of Fort Blakely. President Andrew Johnson would promote Turner to brigadier general (by brevet) retroactive to Mar. 26, 1865 for his actions during the siege of Mobile. A very extensive history of General Turner and the 108th Illinois is included containing photographs, service records, regimental reports, pension documents, etc. spelling out Turner's entire military career and his life post-war. A fine relic from a valiant fighting general.
