    Notes:

    Her origins are unproven, but the most recent and probably best theory was put forward by Dean Crawford Smith and Melinde Lutz Sanborn in The Ancestry of Eva Belle Kempton 1878-1908, Part I (Boston: New England Historic Genealogical Society, 1996), pp. 450-51. In her sketch for John Stone (login required) in the Early New England Families Study Project (citation details below), Alicia Crane Williams summarized the discussion:

    "Likely daughter of Barnaby and Mary (Wells) Rogers. John Stone and his wife, Anne, and Nathaniel Treadway were legatees in the wills of EDWARD HOWE (GMB, 2:1013-16) and his wife Margaret Wells, but the exact nature of their relationship 'remains a matter of discussion.' J. Gardner Bartlett disproved the theory that Anne was a sister of Treadway's wife and thus a daughter of Edward Howe. He believed that Anne was likely a sister of Nathaniel Treadway and that their mother was probably a sister of Edward Howe. Dean Crawford Smith and Melinde Lutz Sanborn in their 1995 TAG article 'The English Origins of The Howe and Treadway Families of Watertown. Massachusetts' accepted that relationship, but by 1996 in The Ancestry of Eva Belle Kempton... Part I, further research had led them to suggest it was more likely that John Stone's wife was Ann Rogers, baptized at Boxted, England, 14 May 1615 to Barnaby and Mary [Wells] Rogers, and thus a niece of Margaret Wells, who had married Edward Howe."

    If John Stone's wife Anne was indeed Anne Rogers, daughter of Barnaby Rogers and Mary Wells, she was baptised at Boxted, Essex on 14 May 1615.

    Anne married John Stone before 1640. John (son of Deacon Gregory Stone and Margaret Garrad) was born before 31 Jul 1618; was christened on 31 Jul 1618 in Nayland, Suffolk, England; died on 5 May 1683 in Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts; was buried in Old Burying Ground, Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts.     See our entry for John Bent (1689-1759), son of Hannah Stone's husband John Bent, for why we believe that Alicia Crane Williams (citation details below) is mistaken in thinking that Hannah Stone may have lived as late as 1691. We think she died much sooner after 9 Jun 1683, her last appearance in a surviving record, probably in the mid-1680s, and that John Bent's two sons John and David are clearly sons by his second wife Martha Rice.
