    He was a ship's carpenter.

    One of the nine founding settlers of Newport, Rhode Island. "On 28 April 1639, he and eight others signed a compact, and soon established the town of Newport at the southern end of Aquidneck Island." [Wikipedia]

    Contrary to several reports, he was almost certainly not the same man as the Thomas Hazard who appears in records of Newtown, Long Island (then called Middelburg) from 1652 to 1656.
