    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Alternate death: 4 Dec 1688, Windsor, Hartford, Connecticut

    Notes:

First seen in 1639, at Hartford. He appears to have been an original Hartford proprietor; his name is on the Founders Monument in downtown Hartford. Moore and Allied Families (citation details below) says "it is generally believed" that he arrived at Hartford in 1636 with the Rev. Hooker's party, but while this is plausible there exists no known evidence to confirm it.

The Hartford land distribution of Feb 1640 shows that he was given several parcels of land by the Rev. Samuel Stone, so it is notable that later, in 1659, he was one of those who protested Stone's appointment as Hartford minister and who removed to Hadley as a result. In 1661 he removed to Northampton. He may or may not have been a personal friend of the Rev. Stone, but he was the son-in-law of former Connecticut governor John Webster, a leading figure in the protests against the Rev. Stone, and blood is often thicker than water.

Moore and Allied Families says that he died in Windsor, Connecticut, "where he was probably visiting his daughter, Hannah Loomis." His page at the Society of the Descendants of the Founders of Hartford says that he died in Hartford.
