    "This family perhaps took its name from Amfreville-sur-Iton (Elect, de Pont-de-l'Arche); or, as M. Bémont states [Roles Gascons, vol. iii, p. 119), from Offranville, near Dieppe. Lower (Dict. of Family Names) supposes that the name is Humfredi villa, the vill of Humphrey. Hodgson [Northumberland, pt. ii, vol. i, p. 8), from finding it sometimes written Unfrancvilla, thinks it means bond-town. Its usual latin equivalent was, however, Umframvilla."     Royal Ancestry and various other sources give this Hugh de Morwick's wife as a Juliana, sometimes asserted as a daughter of "Robert de Reveley." But in 2016 Andrew B. W. MacEwen, John P. Ravilious, and Rosie Bevan, in "Gang Warily! Juliana de Reveley and the Randolphs: A Cautionary Tale" (citation details below) established that this was a "false genealogy derived from scribal error", that "Robert de Reveley" was a later construct, and that this Hugh de Morwick's wife and the mother of his daughters was Agnes de Heyford, daughter of Roger de Heyford and Margery Gobion.

    "Gilbert (de Umfreville), Earl of Angus [S.], s. and h., b. about 1244. In 1265 he joined the rising of the Barons against the King. He is styled Earl of Angus in June 1267. In 1281 he was one of the Nobles who swore to ratify the marriage of Margaret of Scotland with Eric, King of Norway. In 1291, being then Governor, not only of Dundee and Forfar Castles, but of the whole territory of Angus, he refused to surrender it to England unless under an indemnity from the King, and from all the Competitors to the Scottish Crown. On 24 June, 1 Oct., and 2 Nov. (1295) 23 Edw. I, and on 26 Aug. (1296) 24 Edw. I, he was sum. to Parl. by writs directed Gilberto de Umframvill, whereby he may be held to have become Lord Umfreville, and on 28 June (1283) 11 Edw. I, and again from 6 Feb. (1298/9) 27 Edw. I to 26 Aug. (1307) I Edw. II, he was sum. to Parl. under the designation of Earl of Angus, the writs being directed Gilberto de Umframvill (or Unfranvill) comiti de Anegos. He m. Elizabeth, 3rd da. of Alexander (Comyn), Earl of Buchan [S.], by Elizabeth, 3rd da. and coh. of Roger (de Quincy), Earl of Winchester. He d. shortly before 13 Oct 1307, and was bur. in Hexham Priory.
