According to the published vital records of Hallowell, Maine, David L. Gardner married, second, 24 Feb 1858, Eliza W. Nason (daughter of Mark Nason, Esq. of Fayette); and, third, 27 Apr 1864, in Brooklyn, N.Y., Mrs. Emily W. Tucker, of Brookline, N.Y. [sic -- there is no Brookline in New York state], born Wiscasset, daughter of the Hon. Frank Clark, her second marriage.

Also according to the published vital records of Hallowell, Maine, David L. Gardner died 3 Jun 1866 by suicide.

David married Abigail A. Winslow on 1 Apr 1838 in Hallowell, Kennebec, Maine. Abigail (daughter of Stephen Winslow and Rebecca Blish) was born on 9 Oct 1813 in Augusta, Kennebec, Maine; died on 30 Sep 1853 in Hallowell, Kennebec, Maine; was buried in Hallowell Village Cemetery, Hallowell, Kennebec, Maine. ancestry.com's "King Family Tree" presents several records for Frederick A. C. Gardiner. His 1903 application for a US passport shows his permanent residence as Newton Centre, Massachusetts. Harvard Graduates magazine, volume 22, 1914, reports the marriage of his daughter Elizabeth Manning Gardner to Charles Edward Whitmore "at Newton Centre, May 31, 1913." Probably not quite correct -- two other alumni publications and the 7 Jun 1913 issue of the Cambridge Tribune place the wedding in Boston. But it's perfectly plausible that Harvard Graduates magazine was confused by the fact that Elizabeth Gardner was herself from Newton Centre.

His Maine birth record shown on this ancestry.com page gives his last name as Gardiner, but this record states that it's a copy of the original, "from the Hallowell book of births." Vital Records of Hallowell, Maine, to the year 1892 ed. Edward Johnson (Auburn, Maine: Maine Historical Society, 1924) gives his birth, and that of all his Guptill/Gardiner siblings, under "Gardiner" on pages 111-112. It's definitely the same group of children, offspring of "D. L. and Abby A.", including the distinctively-named sister "Abby Inez". (It also says that his actual birth date was 9 Jan 1848, just as the handwritten copy says. The ancestry.com page, however, says 7 Jan 1848, and this is what Frederick Gardiner himself put on his 1903 passport application.)

Frederick married Ella S. Smith on 28 Apr 1875 in Newton, Middlesex, Massachusetts. Ella (daughter of Ammi Smith and Hannah B. Shaw) was born on 15 Apr 1854 in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts; died on 12 Jan 1927 in Woodstock, Windsor, Vermont; was buried in Newton Cemetery, Newton, Middlesex, Massachusetts. Elizabeth married Charles Edward Whitmore on 31 May 1913 in Church of St. John the Evangelist, Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts. Charles (son of William Henry Whitmore and Frances Theres Walling "Fanny" Maynard) was born on 26 Sep 1887 in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts; died on 7 Dec 1970 in Santa Clara, Santa Clara, California; was buried in Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts. His papers, described as "Journal, reports, and printed articles, relating to the development of the Polaris missile and other American naval weapons systems", are at the Hoover Institution. In connection with those papers, the Online Archive of California describes him as "American physicist; chief scientist, Special Projects Office, United States Navy, 1957-1959; chief scientist (ocean systems), Lockheed Missiles and Space Company, 1969-1983."

His page at the Mathematics Genealogy Project is here, where it can be seen that his great-grand-advisor was Felix Klein, of the bottle; one of Klein's two advisors was Rudolf Lipschitz, and one of Lipschitz's grand-advisors was Joseph Fourier.
