    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Alternate birth: New Hampshire

    Notes:

There is a blurry photo of a balding gentleman in a suit and tie that is widely shown on the web as being an image of this Andrew Lee Allen, despite the fact that the gentleman's clothing is more modern than anything worn before 1870, and the photo is clearly captioned "Andrew Allen, Born Aug 17, 1832". In other words, it's Andrew Lee Allen, Jr. (1832-1918). Sometimes we wonder if people are doing genealogy in their sleep.

From "Our Family" by Charles Hopkins Allen [Ancestors and Descendants of Andrew Lee and Clarinda Knapp Allen]:

"Andrew Lee Allen was born in Limerick, York Co., Maine November 24th 1791. He was the son of Elijah Allen, who was born in 1763 at Stratham, Rockingham Co., New Hampshire, and his first wife, Mehitable Hall, who was christened March 26th, 1769 at Rochester, Strafford Co., New Hampshire.

"His mother died June 25th, 1800 in Corinth, Orange Co., Vermont and his father was remarried October 21st, 1809 to Hannah, widow of George Perry. His father died October 19th, 1839 at Limerick, York Co., Maine.

"After his mother's death Andrew Lee Allen went to live with his maternal grandfather, Rev. Avery Hall, staying until he was 14 years of age. He worked at the blacksmith trade. Not being satisfied, he left home and never went back again. He went on shipboard to help protect the American vessels during the war known as the War of 1812. He left there and went into Canada, where he got into trouble with the British by drinking a toast at a barn-raising. The toast was, 'he wished that the Eagle of America would triumph over the crown of Great Britain,' for which he was arrested by the British. Making his escape he went into the state of New York, Cattaraugus Co., where he entered one hundred and sixty acres of land, and made himself a very nice home. He planned to settle down for life and he soon owned a large grove of sugar maple trees besides his prosperous farm.

"On December 11th, 1824, he married Clarinda Knapp, daughter of Calvin and Deborah (Hopkins) Knapp. Clarinda was a refined, educated woman who was highly skilled in the arts of fine painting, sewing, tailoring, ladies' leghorn hat designing, and homemaking. Her gentle upbringing had a great influence on the lives of those about her. She was a woman of true faith and was a Bible scholar.

"They remained in Burton, Cattaraugus Co., New York until they had seven children, namely: Elijah, Lydia, Saphronia, Charles, Andrew, James, and Sidney. They had not joined any religious society but were honest and upright with all men, waiting for something to come along that would give them better satisfaction than the religions of the day. [...]"

Andrew married Clarinda Knapp on 11 Dec 1824 in Cattaraugus, New Hampshire. Clarinda (daughter of Calvin Knapp and Deborah Hopkins) was born on 10 Aug 1802 in Bethlehem, Litchfield, Connecticut; died on 7 Dec 1862 in Richmond, Cache, Utah. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

Avery Hall, pastor of the church in Rochester, N. H., from 15 October 1766 to 10 April 1775; and had two children", but it gives her no birth, death, or marriage dates.

Possibly a soldier in the Revolution. Claimed by various sources as a Minute Man, a private in Co. 9, 5th Conn. Regiment, and a major commanding the 11th Massachusetts.

His Find a Grave page calls him "Sergeant" and says "Moses Knapp stood with his neighbors on their Town Green on 18 July 1776 and swore an oath to uphold and defend their liberties and freedoms fourteen days after the Declaration of Independence had been signed. In 1775 he served in Capt. Nehemiah Beardsley's 9th Company of Col. David Waterbury's 5th Connecticut Regiment. In July 1779 he was part of an expedition to Fairfield and Norwalk for defense of this and the rest of the United States of America, serving in the 6th Alarm List of Col. Nehemiah Beardsley's 16th Connecticut Regiment."

    Notes:

Moses Knapp and Jemima Mead were first cousins, both being grandchildren of Caleb Knapp and Hannah Smith.

Ancestors of the political Romney family:

    Moses Knapp (1709-1787) = Jemima Mead (1708-1766)
    Abraham Knapp (1737-1836) = Martha Comstock (?-?)
    Sarah Knapp (1757-1807) = Charles Robison (1746-1826)
Charles Robison (1785-1840) = Jerusha Rebecca Kellogg (1785-1836)
Lewis Seth Robison (1816-1883) = Clarissa Minerva Duzette (1822-1891)

  8. 25.  Jemima Mead was born about 1708 in Greenwich, Fairfield, Connecticut (daughter of Ebenezer Mead and Sarah Knapp); died before 1766 in Stamford, Fairfield, Connecticut.

    Notes:

New England Families Genealogical and Memorial (citation details below) calls her "Jemima Weed"; this is probably due to the Rev. Elijah B. Huntington's mistranscription in his 6 Apr 1797 Registration of Births, Marriages and Deaths of Stamford Families.

Although Nicholas Knapp Genealogy doesn't, in its entry for Sarah Knapp, list Jemima among her children with Ebenezer Mead, in its entry for Moses Knapp it calls Jemimah Mead "dau. of Ebenezer Mead and Sarah (Knapp)." Meanwhile, Spencer P. Mead's History and Genealogy of the Mead Family of Fairfield County does in fact list Jemima as a daughter of Ebenezer and Sarah, and records her marriage to Moses Knapp. So Jemima and Moses were first cousins, both grandchildren of Caleb Knapp and Hannah Smith.

His Find a Grave page says that he was born in Carrickfergus, county Antrim, a son of John Kasson and Mary Ruthven, but no proof is offered for this claim.

Judah married Rebecca Hamlin on 11 Aug 1720. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  24. 59.  Rebecca Hamlin

    Notes:

Gerald R. Fuller claims her as a daughter of Eleazar Hamlin and Lydia Sears, who are already ancestral to TNH via their son Benjamin. This runs up against the problem that H. Franklin Andrews's well-documented 1902 The Hamlin Genealogy lists, as the only children of Eleazar Hamlin and Lydia Sears, Benjamin (b. 1692), Lydia (b. 1694), Mary (b. 1696), and Elisha (b. 1698).

Fuller's argument consists of pointing out that after Eleazar Hamlin died in 1698, Lydia Sears married Thomas Snow in 1706 and they named their first child Lydia in 1707, which, Fuller claims, they wouldn't have done if Lydia Sears already had a daughter named Lydia by her first marriage, to which we reply, have you ever done any genealogy? Fuller continues: "Therefore the Hamlin Genealogy made a mistake in listing the first Lydia and it should have been Rebecca, who md. 11 May 1720 Judah Berry. The first Lydia never existed." To say that this is unconvincing is to understate the case. The History of Hardwick, Massachusetts and the Stephen Hopkins "silver book" both call Judah Berry's second wife Rebecca Hamlin, so we're keeping the surname, but we have found no evidence of her specific parentage.

    Children:
