    From Wikipedia:

Nathaniel Butler [...] ]was an English privateer who later served as the colonial governor of Bermuda during the early 17th century. He had built many structures still seen in Bermuda today including many of the island's coastal fortresses and the State House, in St. George's, the oldest surviving English settlement in the New World (the State House, completed in 1620, was the first purpose-built building to house the Bermudian parliament). He also has the distinction of introducing the potato, the first seen in North America, to the early English colonists of Jamestown, Virginia.

First serving in the service of the Earl of Warwick during his early sailing career, he was later appointed as governor of Bermuda, then administered by the Somers Isles Company (an offshoot of the Virginia Company), a post which he served from 1619 to 1622. During this time, he salvaged guns from a shipwrecked vessel and used them to arm the island forts then under construction including Southampton Fort and those of Smith's and Paget Island in 1620 (the incident would later be recorded by John Smith in 1624). While Governor of Bermuda, he played an indirect role in the development of the Bermuda rig, when he employed a shipwrecked Dutch boat-builder. He would also be the first to introduce the potato to North America when, in 1621, he had a cargo of potatoes shipped to Governor Francis Wyatt of Jamestown. He was the third governor of Bermuda.

After a brief stay in Jamestown the following year, during which he published a report entitled "Unmasked Face of Our Colony in Virginia as it was in the winter of the Year 1622" later presented to the Privy Council upon his return to London, Butler was made an Admiral of the Providence Island colony, at the age of 61. He later found employ with the Providence Island Company during 1639 and 1640.

While on a privateering expedition in mid-1639 along the Spanish Main, he successfully captured a Spanish frigate at the harbour of Trujillo, and was later paid 16,000 pesos in ransom. However, the frigate alone was considered a poor prize by the standards of the time and, suffering from inexperienced officers unfamiliar with the region (including future privateer James Riskinner), the expedition followed a very erratic course throughout the Caribbean and failed to capture anything else of value by the time of their return to Providence in September 1639.

    Notes:

Our entry for her husband Richard Chetwode quotes from Richardson's Royal Ancestry: "About 1556 Charles Tyrell, Gent., brought suit to have Richard and Agnes' marriage annulled, after which Cardinal Pole declared their marriage invalid. In 1559 the Court of Audience rescinded the annulment."

Charles Hansen's "The Barons of Wodhull" (citation details below) gives considerably more detail about this drama. Richard Chetwood had been Gentleman of the Privy Chamber to Edward VI, and like most of the young king's allies, fell out of favor when the Catholic queen Mary took the crown. Charles Tyrell appears to have been hoping to use this circumstance in order to marry the wealthy Agnes Woodhull himself. But the most interesting wrinkle to the story is that when Mary died and was succeeded by her Protestant sister Elizabeth, Richard Chetwode had, pending with the Pope in Rome, an appeal against his marriage's annulment. Richard and Agnes's connections in high places had evidently survived the five years of Mary's reign, because the new queen Elizabeth's first law, the April 1559 Act of Supremacy, which re-established the Church of England and prohibited legal appeals to the Pope, included a specific exception for "Richard Chetwood, Esq. and Agnes his wife, by the name of Agnes Woodhall", stating that if the Pope should rule to affirm their marriage, that would be considered valid in English law, notwithstanding all other provisions of the Act. As Hansen puts it, "Thus, as history would have it, the first baron of Wodhull was listed in Domesday Book, which validated the results of the Norman Conquest, while the heiress of the last baron was named in the act of Parliament which affirmed the success of the Protestant Reformation in England."

Notwithstanding the Act of Supremacy's carve-out for Richard and Agnes, in fact the Pope never did rule, and the validity of their marriage was re-affirmed in 1559 and 1560 by the Court of Audience in Canterbury, an entirely English church court.

Agnes married Richard Chetwode before Jan 1556. Richard (son of Roger Chetwode and Ellen Masterson) died between 6 Jan 1560 and 12 Jan 1560; was buried in St. Dunstan in the West, London, England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

His relationship to the Parliamentary cause in the English Civil War is extraordinarily complex and beyond the scope of this database.

He was probably born, like his sister Elizabeth, in Keysoe, Bedfordshire. Contrary to his Wikipedia article and his entry in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, he was not a great-grandson of Oliver St. John, first Baron St. John of Bletso; they were instead first cousins twice removed, being both descended from John St. John (d. 1525) and his wife Sibyl ferch Morgan ap Jenkin ap Philip.

One of JTS's eleven proven "gateway ancestors." Sister to the Oliver St. John who was chief justice of England under Oliver Cromwell.

"She…was known for her beauty, dignity and commanding presence. For a woman of those days she had received a good education which made her the fit companion of the scholars and statesmen who were her relations. Even in her old age she did not lose her youthful fondness for the great poets of England, Chaucer, Spenser and Shakespeare, with whose works her husband's library at Lynn was stored. It is clear from the circles in which she moved that she was well informed about current affairs and the rights of government and royal prerogative." [John Roger Scott Whiting, citation details below]

She was a half first cousin 4 times removed to Henry VII, through descent from Henry VII's grandmother Margaret Beauchamp (d. 1482). By the same common ancestor, she was a half fifth cousin once removed to her contemporary Charles I, making her possibly the seventeenth-century emigrant to New England most closely related to a sitting English monarch.

    Notes:

From Wikipedia (accessed 5 Sep 2021):

He immigrated to Maryland in about 1635. On June 19, 1641, Neale received 1000 acres (4 km2) of land for having transported himself and five servants into the Province of Maryland. He assigned these acres to Thomas Hebden.

In a warrant dated July 25, 1641 in London from Lord Baltimore, Neale was granted another 2000 acres (8 km2) on October 31, 1642 for a manor which would be called Wollaston. The manor would prove to be the principal seat of the Neale family for several generations and was situated in what would later be called Charles County, Maryland.

Neale was a member of the Maryland Council 1643 and again in 1644. By 1647 he had returned to England leaving his father-in-law, Benjamin Gill, as his attorney and representative in Maryland. During his absence from Maryland he resided in Spain and Portugal, where he engaged in commerce, and was also employed in various affairs by the King and the Duke of York.

In 1660 he was agent of Lord Baltimore at Amsterdam to protest against the settlement of Dutch upon the Delaware. On January 9, 1659/60 Lord Baltimore issued a special order, reciting that whereas Neale, formerly an inhabitant of Maryland, has been absent from the province for some years, and now desires to return with his family there to reside and inhabit, he has full leave to do so as also to possess such lands as he has a right to, and to enter and trade freely in any port in Maryland. [...]

Many of Neale's descendants became Jesuit priests, including Bennett Neale, Archbishop Leonard Neale, Francis Neale, Charles Neale, and William Matthews. One of his descendants, William Gaston Lewis, became a Confederate general in the Civil War.

Undated letter to the Washington Post from Gervaise A. Neale Jr.:

In 1635-36, Neale had a warrant of 1,000 acres in Maryland. He raised crops of that period and dealt in commerce with the Indians. Several years later, Lord Baltimore (Cecil Calvert) instructed his brother Leonard to assign 2,000 acres to Neale, thus granting him manorial privileges under English law. His holdings included all the land on the peninsula from Cuckhold Creek to Cobb Island on the Potomac river.

He performed many commissions for the governor in addition to his service as member of the assembly as one of the governor's Privy Council and as commissioner the treasury.

Just before his return to England in 1643 to assist his king in the war against the Cromwellian forces, an incident occurred that brought indictments against Neale for aiding in the escape of Richard Ingle, said to have been a pirate. Ingle was captured during a dispute over the ownership of Kent Island by a Virginian named Claibourne and for attempting to do trade at various Maryland ports without a license. With war raging in England and Maryland's desire to remain neutral, it was considered prudent not to create a political incident, and Ingle was allowed "to escape" to his ship and flee. Charges against Neale were quickly dropped.

Neale was in England from about 1644 to 1660 to fight for King Charles I and to serve Charles II and the Duke of York (later James II) on emergent matters in Spain and Portugal. Neale's wife, Anne Gill, was a lady in waiting to the Queen Henrietta Marie.

Neale also represented Lord Baltimore in Amsterdam to protest the encroachment of the Dutch on the Delaware River. The commissioners of the Dutch West India House threatened war with Maryland if English colonists tried to remove the Dutch from their territory. When Neale returned to Maryland, Lord Baltimore instructed him to mount an expedition to expel the Dutch, but before hostilities began, New Amsterdam fell to English warships. The Dutch then considered their position on the Delaware River untenable and halted the takeover of additional land.

About three years after Neale's return to the province with his family, he petitioned the Privy Council for the naturalization of his five children. His request was approved, and the descendants of Capt. James Neale became one of the first families of Maryland and Virginia.

"In 1613 [Richard Chetwode] presented a petition to King James I, claiming the ancient barony in fee of Wahull [Wodhull], as being heir lineal and sole of his several ancestors who had been summoned to attend, and had attended, the king as barons. The claim was allowed to drag, and was put forward again by his fourth descendant, Knightley Chetwood, in 1739 ; by his sixth descendant, Jonathan Chetwood, in 1831 ; and by his eighth descendant, Constantia Elizabeth (Chetwood) Aiken (died 1892) in 1890. From Wikipedia (accessed 22 May 2020):

Gershom Bulkeley was an early graduate of Harvard University, receiving his bachelor's degree in 1655 and possibly his master's degree in 1658. After receiving his master's degree he might have married Sarah Chauncy, daughter of then Harvard President, Charles Chauncy. In 1661 became the minister of the Congregational church in New London, CT, where he served for roughly 5 years. He then became minister of the Congregational church in the town of Wethersfield, Connecticut where he served until 1677. He left the ministry and practiced as a physician in Glastonbury, CT.

When the Salem Witch Trials spread from Massachusetts to Connecticut in the autumn of 1692, he expressed considerable scepticism about the evidence, saying that he had heard nothing of any weight to convince him that anyone was guilty of witchcraft. In particular he argued that Marcy Disborough, one of the only two women accused in Connecticut who actually stood trial for witchcraft, was the victim of the malice of her neighbours. Mercy was founded guilty and sentenced to death, but received a reprieve. She was set free and died some time after 1709.

Gershom married Sarah Chauncy on 6 Oct 1659 in Concord, Middlesex, Massachusetts. Sarah was born on 13 Jun 1631 in Ware, Hertfordshire, England; died on 3 Jun 1699 in Wethersfield, Hartford, Connecticut. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

"John Sargent, Former Doubleday President, Dies at 87." The New York Times, 8 Feb 2012:

John T. Sargent, who as president and later chairman of Doubleday & Company oversaw its expansion from a modest-size family-controlled book publisher to an industry giant with interests extending into broadcasting and baseball, died on Sunday at his home in Manhattan. He was 87.

The death was confirmed by his son, John T. Sargent Jr., the chief executive of Macmillan, the publishing company.

Mr. Sargent, who was already working for Doubleday when he married Neltje Doubleday, granddaughter of the company's founder, Frank Nelson Doubleday, in 1953, was named president and chief executive in 1961. At the time, the company was largely a trade book publisher; it also ran a book club, a New York bookstore and a modest printing concern.

Over the next 17 years, in partnership with Nelson Doubleday Jr., grandson of the founder, Mr. Sargent worked to expand all of those enterprises, largely succeeding in spite of a divorce in 1965 and an insurrection by a minority of the company's shareholders, led by his former wife, who wanted it to go public.

By 1979, the year after he left the presidency and was made chairman, Doubleday was publishing 700 books annually. The company had bought a textbook subsidiary and the Dell Publishing Company, which included Dell paperbacks. It was operating more than a dozen book clubs, including the mammoth Literary Guild; more than two dozen Doubleday bookshops across the country; and four book printing and binding companies.

In addition, Mr. Sargent led the company's expansion into radio and television broadcasting and film production. As chairman, he was involved in the company's purchase of the New York Mets in 1980.

The Doubleday company eschewed publicity and the prying of journalists. "The Sphinx Called Doubleday" was the headline on a 1979 article about the company in The New York Times, which described its publishing ethos this way: "There is no class of book that is considered a 'Doubleday book,' nor is there any book that would automatically be judged unsuitable for the Doubleday imprint. Generally speaking, the house frowns on books loaded with sex, it would be unlikely to publish an anti-Kennedy book since Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis is an editor there, and it doesn't exhaust itself trying to lasso serious literature."

The company may have been known for its secretive ways, but Mr. Sargent was visible among the New York elite, both during business hours and after. A strapping man, dapper and sociable, he was a voracious reader, an erudite speaker and, at one time, a poetry editor who worked with Theodore Roethke, the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award winner, who became a friend and, according to family lore, spent more than one night sleeping in the Sargent bathtub after an evening of imbibing.

He dined with his famous authors — who included Daphne du Maurier, Peter Benchley, Alex Haley, Leon Uris and Stephen King — and other notable friends; attended A-list parties with socialites like Brooke Astor; frequented the opera; hobnobbed with movie stars. He was a friend and frequent escort of Mrs. Onassis, and hired her as an editor at Doubleday.

"The guy liked dressing up in a tux and going out," his son said. "The publishing world was his world, and the social aspect was part of it. It all folded together."

John Turner Sargent was born on June 26, 1924, and spent his early years in Cedarhurst, on Long Island. (No one in the family knows where, exactly, he was born, his son said, and his birth certificate has not yet been found.) His grandfather was the well-known botanist Charles Sprague Sargent; his father, Charles Jr., worked in finance. He went to St. Mark's School in Massachusetts and spent a year at Harvard before joining the Navy. Prevented from fighting overseas because of a punctured eardrum, he spent the war years "loading bombers in Florida," his son said.

After his discharge he worked briefly for Time magazine and then began at Doubleday, writing book jacket copy, in the late 1940s. Over the next several years he read manuscripts, sold syndication and subsidiary rights, worked as an advertising manager and editor and was business manager of several publishing divisions. As president of the company, he succeeded Douglas Black, who had succeeded Nelson Doubleday Sr.

Mr. Sargent met Ms. Doubleday, a painter who now lives in Wyoming, when he was 28 and she was 18. After their divorce she waged a long battle, enlisting some other shareholders, to get the company to sell shares to the public, but her mother, her brother and her former husband all lined up against her and the effort failed. The company was finally sold to the German conglomerate Bertelsmann in 1986.

A longtime colleague of Mr. Sargent, Samuel S. Vaughan, who served the company as editor in chief and publisher, died on Jan. 30.

In addition to John Jr., Mr. Sargent's survivors include a daughter, Ellen; six grandchildren; his wife, the former Betty Nichols Kelly, whom he married in 1985; and two stepchildren, Elizabeth Lee Kelly and James Hamilton Kelly.

Elizabeth 'Bibbs' [sic] Arnold of Los Altos, a mathematician, environmentalist and wildlife advocate who helped crack the Japanese code during World War II, died Friday, Sept. 18, 1992, at her Los Altos Hills home of lung cancer. She was 76.

A native of San Francisco, Dr. Arnold was reared in Marin County and was the oldest grandchild of Rep. William Kent, for whom the city of Kentfield was named.

The daughter of a prominent San Francisco attorney, Eugene Arnold, she attended the Katherine Branson School in Ross and graduated first in her class in 1932. The school later named a day in her honor after she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa at Vassar College in her junior year.

After graduating from Vassar in 1937, Dr. Arnold earned her Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of California at Berkeley in 1941.

During World War II, Dr. Arnold was recruited by the Navy and worked on a team of cryptographers cracking Japanese codes, for which she received a Meritorious Civilian Service Award.

In the 1960s, Dr. Arnold worked on machine language translation at Lockheed Missiles and Space Co. Inc.

After her retirement in 1969, Dr. Arnold helped establish a recycling center in Los Altos and worked with Wildlife Rescue, helping injured animals.

Dr. Arnold is survived by her husband of 46 years, Dr. William Francis Whitmore of Los Altos; four sons, Charles Whitmore of Washington, D.C., Edward Whitmore of San Francisco, Thomas Whitmore of Oakland and Peter Whitmore of Victoria, B.C. Also surviving are her brothers, George Stanleigh Arnold of Kentfield, Peter Arnold of Grass Valley and Anthony Arnold of Novato.

    -----

Note that the above obituary is in error in two respects. Her father was George Stanleigh Arnold, not Eugene Arnold; and her family nickname was "Bibba", not "Bibbs."

Her page at the Mathematics Genealogy Project is here, showing her to be a generation of advisors closer to Felix Klein than her husband was.
